Putin didn't care about the new president. No matter who was elected, the sanctions against Russia would have gotten worse (Trump couldn't avoid that). He knew, the power is not in the hands of potus. The deep state has a much bigger influence (i.e. intelligence, military industrial complex and several lobbies).
