@Rinky Of course, the situation is completely different now, it was just a thought about Kremlin's strategy behind all this, the real psychological motive. I just found the parallels ironically similar. (in reverse order) :-]
It makes sense historically for the current Russian generation, and the leaders in Russia to think what they propagate, at least to them. For a long time I was trying to figure out the real motive apart from imperialistic delusions of the ex-kgb coup in power, and I couldn't make a reasonable guess/ prediction, excluding that of the Putin regime (and the "92%"of Russians supporting him) being completely deluded. :-] which I don't believe they are - to make it clear.
Yet, depending on the date you pick (on the map) as the start for your ideology, then you can make up lots of crap - sorry, territorial claims as justification for expansionism.
Crap like the concept of "poor Russian minorities" which need, and with "Putin's support"(green men armies) are taking over sovereign nations territory to join it to the Russian federation.. :-]
...what about the tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees from those areas/territories?
...two years ago, Russian Crimea was unthinkable, there was no Lugansk rep./Donieck rep. minorities "fighting for freedom"... :-] there was the euro2012 and a sovereign Ukraine... as Russia stuck out to their international agreements which they made in 1994 when Ukraine gave up their nuclear program in the name of peace, Russia kept to their agreements with the exception of Georgia offensive that is - but still the relations were reasonable. Its all facts, not "anti-Russian"- again, to make it clear. Putin just opened a door of justification for stealing resources (territory), "unless it are regions that bring him strategic benefit or resources." exactly, to me it is a similar case to religious fundamentalism - killing in the name of god - as justification. I don't buy it.

ukraine is just a teritory.
That's your personal opinion. But to international law it's a sovereign state.
