I'm planning a trip in Finland this summer, and I have a some questions, especially for Latvian and Eesti people. The plane lands in Riga and I would like to get to Helsinki as fast possible (i have a limited number of available days, nothing against you people :) ):
- are the buses from Ecolines respecting their schedule, or large delays (1h+) are to be expected?
- for the Tallin-Helsinki ferry I found the operators Linda and Silja. Which one do you recommend? What kind of weather is bad enough for a cruise to be canceled, or create significant delays? Is it the often the case that cruises get cancelled because of the weather during summer?

Ecolines are not as comfty as Lux Express buses but they all arrive in time mostly.
Only used Tallink in my life i think. I think Silja is the same as Tallink to be honest, somekinda subsidiary or so. Linda has faster ships(about an hour) but they are those small catamarans or something so they might not go out with storm.
Here is a list of ships from Tallinn to Helsinki for this week. You can check it the week you plan on coming here. All the other ships are kinda new and quite fast(2 hours or so) except for Baltic Queen, do not take that one:P

Most of the time these ships sail with heavy storms aswell. Company cant lose money because of a little storm you know:P
PS. Helsinki is the same as Tallinn or Riga. Go alot more north to explore real finland:P

Thanks for the info.
Tallink and Silja are the same line (they have the same website at least :) ).
And I'm going way north than Helsinki, as I want to catch the midnight sun. I think it will be Rovaniemi, as I didn't find another town north of it where I could spend a few days and not get bored. Let me know if you think I should visit something else.

If you are really going as quickly as possible (from Riga to Helsinki on the same day, not stopping Tallinn), then do not forget to calculate some time to get from the bus station to the port in Tallinn. You have to be some time in advance at the port, so I guess your bus needs to arrive at least two hours before your boat leaves (to be on the safe side in case of delays).
need a 3-7 day holiday starting 21/09.
Parents coming along.
Totally no idea where to go to that we haven't all been yet.

My parents already did visit Madeira 2 years ago. Corsica and Sardinia ar options, but I doubt 1 week is enough to do even 1 of these 2 in a decent way?
you got unlimited resources besides time and you choose kurwaland o_O
