Asunto: Football Strategy - Brand New Manager Game

2015-05-12 16:10:12
And the Belgian users are familiar to you ;-)

I played the beta, but if I didn't want a ME, I would still be playing Hattrick :P And the path they took may appeal some, but for me it is too close to offline managers, with over abundance of decisions, parameters, etc. Gameplay isn't granted at all.

And the ME is not a minor thing: like offline managers, they have tons of player attributes, some frankly difficult to disentangle from others. If we can learn something from SK, UM, etc, is that it is quite hard to get 6-8 skills to make sense in the field and in a noticeable way (so that there is something to "manage"). Sokker has improved vastly in the last 10 years, but it is still plagued by issues. UM went crazy with tactical options but matches still look like my Spectrum 48k arcades (talkng about simulation, not graphics).
I believe what you call "ME preview" is actually "graphics" preview. You can get the best animations ever to Sokker ME, then you'll have a realistic-looking Beckham kicking corners straight out of the field :P When I say ME, I'm thinking of whether you will be able to see the difference between an "high agility" and a "high speed "player on the pitch in a way that is gameplay relevant, flexible to manage and still looks like football. As I said, quite a challenge with a few variables, way worse with so many. ANd then multiply by the number of roles...
Even offline managers often fall either into horribly buggy engines (due to a Sokker-like approach of step-by-step simulation) or overly simplified engine (due to more FIFA-like approach, in which you can forget about the 40 player attributes and just use the highest average player, then watch him perform wonderfully a set of pre-defined, realistic-looking plays)..

True words

also the way ME works in FS...I don't really see how tactic would really matter in this game

players basically do what they want

you can say all you want about sokker, but it has lots of nuances in tactics than can be observed in the game

the result, due to randomness of dribbles/shots, can often fell unfair or unlucky, especially the shooting % is flawed because of the handicap for weaker teams

but you can't say that tactics don't matter in sokker. they do matter, a lot.

I partially agree with your point Borkos. Which is why we went back to our roots and re-did the ME from ground-up. The result is something we are very proud of; here is our new Match Engine trailer and Tactical trailer:

Thanks to the new technology Unity 5 has to offer, you will be able to view all matches straight from the browser without the need of any addon.

Looks very promising!

True, but having individual settings besides the (quite wide range) of general tactic settings is imo a bit over the top.
It reminds me of rugby managers such as blackout where you have to look after 25 skills for a player ...

Individual instructions are very limited so that it doesn't interface much with the general tactics. It's very simple and both (tactics/individual instructions) compliment each other. Testing starts in just 6 days, so then we could really value everyone's opinion.

I'll only be able to join and give it a shot at the end of June :)
2015-05-21 10:57:49
Why would you have them in the first place then if they dont affect much? Just adds to confusion in my opinion.
2015-05-21 17:53:12
You would only understand why when testing begins. Just 5 more days!

Testing will officially start today at footballstrategy.org/testsim 17:00 ST. As previously mentioned, you will be able to generate your own players, formation, and tactics for both sides.

Please note that this is the first true test we will be doing, and bugs are to be expected. We will make sure to take care of any issues quickly and vastly improve your experience before launch date. The new match report and player customization is still work-in-progress. We hope to have these two features functioning late into June.

We have decided to allow two options for viewing a match. One is the WebGL which doesn’t require Unity 3D addon, while the WebPlayer does.

WebGL:

The only advantage for this option is that it doesn’t require Unity 3D addon. Because this technology is new, performance on some computers might not be the best and could take a few minutes to load a match.

Sample match using WebGL:
http://www.footballstrategy.org/engine/WebGL/index.html

Unity WebPlayer:

The only disadvantage for this option is that you must have the Unity 3D addon installed on your computer to view a match. Performance is usually better, and only takes a few seconds for a match to load.

Sample match using Unity WebPlayer:

Please do let us know your experience with these two options.

Currently the bench and press box is disabled in order to have a higher frame-rate. You will be able to enable it as an option in the match drop-down menu in the near future. You will also notice that we significantly increased the duration of a game from 10 minutes to about 20 minutes.

We will be awaiting everyone’s feedback when the test sim page is unlocked in just a few hours, thanks!
