Greek economy close to collapse as food and medicine run short

Alexis Tsipras urges people to vote no in Sunday’s referendum as capital controls bite and vital tourism industry sees tens of thousands cancel holidays in Greece

Greece’s economy is on the brink of collapse after the capital controls imposed ahead of Sunday’s referendum left the country with shortages of food and drugs, the tourist industry facing a wave of cancellations and banks with barely enough money to survive the weekend.

Banks said they had a €1bn cash buffer to see them through the weekend – equal to just €90 (£64) a head for the 11 million-strong population – and would require immediate help from the European Central Bank on Monday whatever the result of the referendum, in which the two sides are running neck and neck.

Medicines, food, banks, tourism ....

Keep up the pro-Alexis Tsipras and support him till the end .... a pity for those who are dragged down because of this dumb blind support.

@Jimceasar

I never wrote that Syriza is communist, left-wing radicalism has a lot of forms, I wrote that they are left-wing corrupt over-spenders. Alexis Tsipras was in the communist KNE.

"dont see nigtmares everywere cause your communist past..."
And it is not seeing "nightmares of the past" - it's understanding history, from which some don't take their lessons :-], hence the nightmare of the present, for Greece. :-]

i lived in communism and it's not was what supposed to be, communism is a brilliant idea like religion
i do not understand the opponents of communism, you want to be a slave to other people ? i suppose not..once again it's about evilness..you prefer to be a slave just to do a kind of selection (like "natural selection") i am not thinking clear i suppose, but that is my opinion

What a joke this referendum!

The text what Greeks vote for isn't on the paper and the other paper is difficult to understand because of technical words, and the text is simply wrong; there is no deal (the plan was still in the making) and because the deadline is already over there is no 'agreement' to vote for.

I really wonder what Syriza wants, a true democratic process and the best for Greece, or their own predetermined course which was already clear BEFORE the elections as Europe was warned for this group.

And what does Syriza has to win with all of this, what is their person gain by ruining Greece?

Really, are you economy professor? I ask you, because you seem specialized in economic issues.

or maybe....;;; are you a member of the Council of Europe?
Because, I see that you have an absolute opinion / view for all issues about Europe and European Union and the other's people opinions, you have them to have fun.

Νext time we will must take a decision for our country, we will call you to tell us your opinion as an expert on all matters/issues.

Sorry that we do not have time to call you to make a speech for tomorrow's referendum.
Next time.....

the best solution is to read all opinion about an object

Absolutely, but not just opinions because they can be completely wrong, opinions based on facts would be best. With only opinions people can use complete nonsense in a discussion as if it is true, like a dumb comment from Yanis Varoufakis (finance minister!!), who is accuses Europe of terrorism.

And maybe you can tell this to your fellow countrymen on this forum :/

or else the only u will do is to speak like a parrot!

So the referendum isn't a joke? The text printed on the ballot paper is all correct? I can't read Greek so I'm glad someone translated the text, and according the translation it is simply wrong. Unbelievable you Greeks on this forum seems to accept this Syriza indoctrination, while you act as if you really care so much.

And this Syriza referendum does meet non-binding guidelines drawn up by the Council of Europe?? No, it doesn't.

"there is no deal (the plan was still in the making) and because the deadline is already over there is no 'agreement' to vote for" ...I think that should be the main point.. its a pointless...

As for "communism is a brilliant idea like religion" - also love it! :-D lol,
I will just anwser, don't get me started on religion.. ;-p
If this was not irony, than what you probably meant is that Marxism is a wishful "well meaning" concept... nothing more, communism as an ideology that is a painful failure on every occasion, as it has no chance of success... whatsoever, controlled socialism (in a rich economy) like Sweden is doable (and necessary in some circumstances), only when it is kept in check, still on most occasions it just breeds left-wing radicalism, hence communism and totalitarianism.

As for democracy in general, I am actually more and more worried, looking at Greece today, recent UK general elections or the Polish presidential elections, the voting systems are imperfect and extremely bias in certain aspects... for this modern day and age, they simply need adjustment, people don't seem to realize how much impact different voting systems actually have. For example, of the top of my head, minimum turnouts are by far too low, in most elections... Alexis Tsipras vote of confidence of only 1/5 of the Greek population being enough, to do what they do now, is mind blowing to me, to be fair Poland's president elect Duda is not much better... :-] Kukiz is even worse, even if he means well (20% of the vote out of the blue), In UK there is the SNP... its all down to cheap promises and short-term populism nowdays.. without any consequences of their actions on them, only people pay.. :-]

Also, political impunity in general is very worrying... :-] Its almost a standard today that politicians over-promise, never fully deliver, plan for the short term on most occasions, only until their term in office is over.. :-] then they can bugger off, with large bonuses of course, and leave a mess for the successors... who do the same... :-]

In General its not looking too good for the future in Europe, especially the outskirts... :-] ..at least Putin slowed down, a little... ;-]

Very funny. That's communism is a regime, where you a slave. In liberal system you are decide about your future, about your own life.

About Greece... Greeks are so lazy. That's a socialist country who must failed. And that's was.

communism cannot be applied into reality but it's a fantastic idea.

about freedom it's just an illusion, occult forces control you from the birth to the death, it's no alternative
