Asunto: Bet on Euro 2016

Are we talking about best players, or are we talking about simulations and being dirty? We are talking about the latter and Lichtsteiner is the worst kind of player possible.

Even though I support Juventus and its players, Stephan is as dirty as it gets. Haven't seen you complaining :-)

And simulating Portugal? Most teams do that unfortunately. Busquets does it all the time, it happend to 'bests' like Xavi, Iniesta, Chiellini is another dirty player. Really see no point in underlining the Portuguese in that aspect.

Well, Lichtsteiner definitly doesn't belong to my favorite players. He's complaining a bit too much imho, his crosses aren't really that good, he's a bit of a hard defender too (but that's normal for a wingback). I can't remember him simulating, but as I don't look international competition, I might have missed it.

There are player that simulate in most NTs, that's true. But there are much more in the NTs of Portugal and Italy. Spain is also pretty bad, with quite a few simulator in the team.

About your first question: seeing you say Lichtsteiner is 10 times worse, I admitted you meant who the best player was and not the dirtiest player. Even then, you can't possibly say Lichtsteiner is 10 times worse (I wouldn't even say he's worse than CR), have you seen both play?

Portugal NT is bad on both sides, having player with a hang to simulation and player with a hang to brutality (remember WC 2006 game against Netherlands?). What we saw yesterday was a hard game, also thanks to referee who should have been himself harder with his decisions.

Licht is complaining, diving and often makes hard attacks...using his elbows etc...I watch every Juventus game, I know how he plays...

Ronaldo sometimes dives...and that's all. And he's not diving as often as he used to years ago, but the opinion sticked to him.

Pepe? 7 yellow cards in whole last season, 0 red...brutal, yeah...:)

It was just boring, worst one I ever saw [first I remember was WC '98].

Though it seems to be the scenario for the future, more or less. 'Weaker' teams are well prepared physically since they train in top 5 European leagues mostly, they know tactics, they know how to defend. Basically there were ~16 Greeces '04 at this tournament.

And no team wants to risk playing open football because they know that the moment they get countered and lose a goal, they are screwed.

As one of the grandpas in this forum, I'm not as pessimistic :P

I have weak memories of WC '86, but I remember WC '90 onwards vividly. And man, this Euro is Brasil 1970 compared to those days. Nothing was foul, Keepers could pick up the ball after a team mate's pass... Football seemed helpless. People complained about Greece '04 because they were an underdog, but Germany '96 was no better.
Of course, part of the reason the 1990s horror didn't grow worse are rule changes (3 points per victory instead of two, only top-2 teams qualifying from France 98 onwards, no more passing to the keeper). But part is also due to the fact that playing defensively isn't always better: we got Netherlands 98-00, Spain 2008-2012, and their club counterparts in Ajax, Barcelona, etc. Even Bayern-Germany more recently. Teams naïvely playing "offensive" for aesthetic reasons get trashed (rightly so :P), but in all these examples their brilliant football actually increased their chances of winning. It's just that not everyone will have nice football as their best strategy, and it is true that most teams will be better off being defensive - but defending well is not that easy either, and once you are 0-1 against a team that plays well you are pretty much done.

But talent comes and goes, and it's never distributed homogeneously, so you will get times in which a particular team is great, times in which there are a bunch of decent teams, and times where everyone is kind of average, especially if you focus on a continent or narrower area. And still, Germany won the last WC playing a very complete football, and this last setback is no reason for them to start playing much more defensively.

Pepe is one of the best defenders in the world. He's brutal on average, but as opposed to other brutal defenders, he isn't constantly violent: he is OK 99% of the time and then every now and then goes psycho and attempts murder, which drives the average up :P

:D C'mon, we all know Pepe is a complete moron, just because he had no "incident" recently doesn't mean anything. (He also played fewer matches this season.)
But take away Pepe and CR and I like the Portuguese team now better than the one some years ago.

When I see Lichtsteiner in NT I wonder how he is a starter at Juve. Complaining without end and seriously bad decision-making.
