Yesterday we played a fantastic match against Macedonia U21 and won 10:0. We played offensively 4-3-3. 4 goals for our team were scored by 20-year-old Foster Madden (Dinamo T), 2 goals by Lewis Sutton (Atlantic FC), 2 goals by Jimmy Kay (FC Lawrenece), 1 goal by Pierre Shultis (Dinamo T) and 1 goal by Greg Johnson (Boscy Footbolowcy) - a beautiful goal scored from a free kick. Before the last round, we are guaranteed promotion to the U21 World Cup! In the last round we will play against the group favorite Germany U21. This will be the last match in the USA U21 for our 21-year-old players.

It was a very good, exciting match. In the 9th minute, Lewis Sutton (Atlantic FC) scored a goal in a one-on-one situation. We defended the lead. We played great in defense, our goalkeeper also had some very good interventions. Unfortunately, we lost a goal in the 84th minute and the score did not change again until the end of the match. For the second time we drew against Germany U21 1:1. Germany is the 8th team in the world ranking (we are ranked 28th), so this draw is not a bad result. We finished second in the table of our group and promoted to the World Cup U21. This is a big success for our team. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this success.

Today was the draw for the WCQ groups. We are in group D and will play against Italy, Cyprus, Panama, Andorra and Costa Rica. This is an American-European group :-) The favorite of the group is definitely Italy. My goal is of course to qualify for the U21 World Cup again.

Due to an error in the WCQ group draw, a redraw was held in the evening. This time we ended up in Group C and will play against Hungary, Scotland, Algeria, United Arab Emirates and Luxembourg. I think it's a more difficult group, but our goal doesn't change - to advance to the U21 World Cup.

On Saturday we will play the first match in Group C of the U21 World Cup Qualifiers. Our opponent will be the group favorite Hungary U21. This is the team from the first pot. Hungary has won the U21 World Cup once and has won bronze medals 5 times. In official matches USA U21 against Hungary U21 played 5 times and all matches were won by Hungarians. History shows that this will be an extremely difficult match for us.

Honestly, looking back in history is irrelevant. These teams are completely different. Although it is interesting that Atilla has been doing the job for 20 seasons now.

This doesn't change the fact that this is a match that will be difficult to win. They have a user base three times that of us. This is more meaningful since the guy has an unlimited pool of players to pick from.

We are going to need a "ME special" in order to win. This CAN actually happen.
It happened last World Cup when Azerbaycan (America sized country) got a draw with them: https://sokker.org/comment?matchID=40528157 and Australia, a country smaller than us, defeated them: https://sokker.org/comment?matchID=40528151 Australia, I can speak for first hand, is a well built team where Achmed trains a bunch of them, much like Norbert does.

There is one positive I can see that works in our favor, but I'm not going to say what it is. Norbert will understand it when he sees it.

I agree with you, Islander. Luck will definitely come in handy, I believe in a surprise and a story like Australia's against Hungary.

the other thing that being a U21 coach drove home to me, is that team scores at THIS level really don't matter much, because there's such a wide and often un-useful spread of skills among players, especially poorly built ones.

Unfortunately, we lost against the favorite of the group, Hungary U21, 0:1. Our opponent scored a goal in the 19th minute of the match. In the second half we changed our tactics from 532 to 442, but the result did not change. The rival was stronger than us.
Next week we will play against UAE U21 and we have to win this match.

At least we kept them to just one goal. Goal differential could matter!
