So if one country calls basketball netball its ok because they have been using the name for the longest, even though the original name was baketball. I think some people are biased because they dont want the name changed maybe because of tradition. I guess all countries should change their sports name to be difficult, England should call cricket english baseball.

Regional names exists for all kinds of sports, especially the less popular sports. Not wanting the name changed because of tradition is exactly what it is. Having an outsider tell you to change your culture is insulting. Let people call it whatever they want as long as it isn't offensive.

Is it insulting or just ignorance and what does being an outsider have to do with it, i guess it feels better if its changed by a local.

The new name should be call throwball

Geez does it really matter what the game is called? My relatives in Germany just call it American Football and have no problem with it....Now don't get me started on the people who bitch about the accuracy of MLB's World Series.

world series is fine assuming the rest of the world is negligible, which is fine by me

I don't have a problem with that because the best players come here to play. If there were a league which could compete with ours, then we'd need to talk. NBA is the same way, though I care little for the sport and even less for the league itself.

You cant handle the truth

another question about 'American Football'- why is the 'fullback' only a quarter of the way back, the halfback are in the midway point, and the tailback is the farthest back, truly 'full back' ?

this screwed my up as a kid...
Much like the term 'skip pass' in basketball...I NEVER saw a basketball player skipping as he passed the basketball....

halfback is the tailback

The nomenclature is left over from the Single-wing offense, where the quarterback was primarily a blocker, the fullback the primary runner and the tailback the primary thrower(but still running way more than throwing)all this behind an unbalanced offensive line.If you google or Wiki the formation it's pretty clear when you see it diagrammed.Halfback came into use when the straight-T formation became all the rage, the fullback would line up 5 yards behind the quarterback with a player split on either side about halfway to the end on a balanced offensive line. Then when the split-T came into vogue the term halfback became an all purpose term to describe running backs until eventually running back became the accepted term. The west coast offense brought the fullback and tailback descriptions back to life(at least in the pros, they never really left college football) to the point where we are today......Man that 'Football 101 for Football Players' class really payed off!

Looks like you got an A in that class.

One of my coaching classes was taught by a guy named Warren Woodrow Hayes, and the guest lecturers included guys named Bo Schembechler, Tony Mason, Joe Paterno, Duffy Daugherty, Lee Tressel, Bron Bacevich, Pat Mancuso, and others I can't remember. Got an A+ in the class!

My High School team ran the single-wing where I played 'inside tackle' for two years and fullback for my senior year.

It's interesting to watch some of the colleges use MY "GO" formation as a 'play buster'. Makes the defense call timeout to allow them to set up a defense for it. If you don't know GO formation .. there are only two offensive linemen [one each side of the center, the remaining 4 linemen and a back are lined up wide to the opposite hashmark. Fullback lines up between those two groups and the other halfback lines up to the shortside like a wingback ... QB has many many many options ... Wrote that formation and options with it back in 1961 ... damn, I'm OLD.

Gonna have to change your handle to Pop Warner,Hondo!....I think football was a lot more fun before it became so straight laced and regimented.I grew up with Mickey McBrides'(the original owner of the Cleveland Browns) grand kids and they found one of Paul Brown's old playbooks, from the fifties, in their dad's office around 1970 or so and when we looked through it was amazing how far ahead of his time he was and how many "gadget"plays he regularly used.

I've got a copy of that playbook, too. Have many old playbooks from the 40's, 50's, etc .. that I acquired over the years.

Have many football 'textbooks' on coaching beginning with the earliest I have which was written by Don Faurot, who invented the 'Split-T' back in the 40's, through Bud Wilkinson and Homer Jones [Oklahoma in the 50's] to stuff from/by Woody, Bo, JoPa, etc.

Should find a market for them, but they have such good sentimental value .. much more than what someone would pay to put them on a shelf.
