depends on what they do during the match not just the skills...maybe he didnt have much to do and when he did he stuffed it up
maybe the DM sitting in front of his position covered it all for him....
my league game my center defender did all the work and the guys behind him actually got better ratings because they didnt have to touch the ball with their uncoordinated legs
Defenders usually get stuffed up ratings...

well my other guy seems to get ratings proportional to his skills....
depends on the offense and defense work done by the player also. The more offense a defender does the more offensive skills they need. This is why a midfielder with no defending gets better marks when played as a winger because they do less defensive work. Also form and stamina play a part.
So basically ratings don't mean a whole lot apart from giving a very rough guide of the strength of a team. The individual skills are more important.
