Australia Cup

Former cup winner Jyuukenbu.F.C were the biggest name to exit in round 2. Their 16 shots to 4 couldn't provide a winner in regulation nor extra time. Jokers & Hackers put three past Hutchinson and when Rogoveanu kicked his penalty wide one of the biggest upsets in cup history was complete.

Alpine Wind fielded a makeshift defense and despite 17 attempts on goal could never equalise after Ryan Morris' strike on 5 minutes. «blazeRs. advancing to the next round and will no doubt enjoy another sold out stadium.

Johan's Men provided one of the games of the round against FC Southside Kings. They led twice, before finishing 2-2 at the end of regulation and the extra period and advanced after winning the penalty shootout 3-1.

Other favoured sides to bow out in round 2 were: WorldClass Utd, King's of Australia, Devil's Angels United and Da Minkees.

There were a few more close calls as well. Achmids Soul 1-2 over a strong finishing South Adelaide Albion. Tollygunge required an 84th minute winner to get past Metro FC. Tong FC 1-2 over wicked 11. Larisa United, CE Principat, Yogic's Army and Hamilton Island all made away with 0-1 wins.

A-League

The Black Flashes, traditionally slow starters, have leapt out of the blocks to top the table after backing up their 6-nil victory in round 1 with a 3-nil victory over The_Comets. Zdrilic had the top mark by an outfield player in Australian domestic history with a 72 over the weekend. The_Comets find themselves in unfamiliar territory near the bottom of the ladder. They moved on Stacy Fyfe (young defender) and Bill Kamara (reserve mid) for ~1.1mill.

Roar FC's new 4-5-1 formation has them off to a flying start once again with 2-nil and 5-nil victories over The_Comets and Punt Road Tigers respectively. Ward ran riot in the last game going on a number of commanding solo runs as well as profitting from a mis-directed back-pass. He has all 7 league goals for the Roar. Punt Road Tigers move to the bottom of the ladder. Their rebuilding continues this time in the midfield as they moved on Antoni Szustecki for ~2mill after acquiring Jeremi Bandach for 4.3mill early last week.

Achmids Soul and Tribe fought out a 2-all draw. Plenty of opportunities for both sides and the scoreline could easily have been higher. Both teams have opened with a pair of draws and find themselves mid-table. Plenty of action off the park for both teams as well with the Soul unloading 7 players for over AU$7.5 million. Tribe went the other way acquiring 4 players for ~AU$6 million, they look to give some depth, are more likely to contribute in the future and won't improve the starting eleven.

FCM tigers had what will probably be one of the most unlikely wins of the season. 2 wayard passes resulted in goals and they managed to keep a clean sheet despite Chelsea getting off 21 shots on goal. 3-nil Tigers the final result. Chelsea.F.C injected Leopold Krzyżan (4.8mill) and Romanian capped Darie Simionescu (8.7mill) into their midfield in the past week which should provide them with much improved service to their forwards.

II.01

Tollygunge showed off their new 4.8mill defender Daniël Boutahar in their 4-0 win over Melbourne Victory. They move clear at the top of the table with all of the other teams involved in draws.

Losers and Gondor Guardians fought out a 1-1 encounter. GG moved on long time club servant and former international Noah Faria for just over 1 mill.

Melbourne Magpies unorthodox formation continued to give the more established teams troubles. They had more chances in their 2-2 draw with inter united and look good for plenty of points in their first season. The Magpies added Claudio Pop (2.6mill Mid) to the attacking half of their midfield during the week.

Tong FC played out an uninspiring nil-all draw against CivilWar F.C. They had 10 shots to 1 but couldn't convert any of them. Manager jkhtong1 was in the pressbox after the game stating the club is prioritising somre more strikepower up front, perhaps a change from their 4-5-1 is on the cards? Civilwar made a minor upgrade on the wing switching out 27yo Steven Galan (320k) for 24yo Avelino Pradas (400k)

II.02

Jyuukenbu F.C move to an early 2 point lead after their 1-0 win over Aussie Bhoys. The Bhoys unloaded 14(!) players for a total of ~ 3.1 million. They still have 19 players on their roster in case you were curious. Obviously we would expect more movements in the near future so watch this space.

Newcastle Titan05 salvaged a point and maintained second on the ladder after Rolauffs 83rd minute cross somehow found the back of the net to make it 2-all. The capacity Dragons United crowd of 10650 weren't impressed. They did get their first look at the million dollar 19yo at wing-back Binyamin Horváth.

Teen Girl Squad profitted from a walk-over against Bushrangers FC after only injured keeper Collina showed up for the match. Claims that he was the fittest player available after a team bender are unsubstantiated at this time. The 7000 Bushrangers fans that turned up obviously weren't invited to the party. Maybe the team was mourning the loss of 6 players, or perhaps celebrating the 600k they added to the club coffers?

Sheffield Wednesday came from 2 goals down to win 4-2 over Shore Chillz. Newly acquired striker Néstor Martagón had a double on debut.

II.03

Railriders vs Tornado Tigers was one of the greatest shootouts in Australian League history. 5-7 the final scoreline with the visiting Tigers taking the points. Tigers were up 1-4 at the half, but the Riders rallied to bring the game back to 5-all on 76 minutes. Tigers pushed ahead once more in the 80th minute and put the result beyond doubt with a 90th minute goal.

Further up the table Larikan FC proved to good for round 1 leaders C.N.F. winning 6-0 on the road in front of a capacity crowd of 13100. A dominating performance from the Larikans with a 22-3 shot count. C.N.F. picked up Att/Mid Gökhan Şalt(583k) during the week. He had a double in the cup as an ATT and had plenty of work as a defensive mid on Sunday.

Cumlionibus got up 2 goals early and held on for the duration as FC de BEARS had trouble finishing. Cumlionibus parted company with defensive mid Gergő Dobó (1.2mill) during the week. They haven't made a purchase since January of 2007, so who knows what their bank balance looks like?

Game of the round was definitely the defensive clash between Krayzee Coconuts and Team Moose Power. Coconuts scored the only goal of the game when Wilkin slotted home the rebound after a Van de Kerkhof tackle and shot. Both title contenders have struggled to create regular chances on goal in their opening two games and now have 1-0-1 records.

II.04

Frogmeisters15 almost completely shut out a usually potent Salgaocar winning 0-5 on the road and allowing just 2 shots all game. Their second 5-nil victory has them clear at the top of table after all the other first round winners lost or drew. Frogmeisters15 picked up 19yo mid prospect Gastone Censini for 800k. He had a run in the cup and looks a season or two at least away from the first team.

Taigum Terriers provided the upset 3-0 win over Forest Green Rovers. FGR had 16 attempts to the Terriers 10 but failed to capitalise.

An 82nd minute winner from Davidson proved the difference for DVS_Strikers to get the home win against Raging Parabolas their capacity 12400 crowd got a close look at the new 9000 bench stand in construction on the southern side of the ground. Parabolas will be disappointed to not convert any of their dozen chances.

Boyd Singers claim their first league point in well over a season with a nil-all draw against Real Galah. It likely won't be their only points this season as they still have a respectable defensive lineup for div II. Galah had 14 shots to the Singers 9 and will feel they should have done better at home.

Nice reading!

And no, a change from 4-5-1 is not on the cards. I can hardly afford 1 good striker.
2008-02-25 09:03:50
Well done naph. Love it.
2008-02-25 12:00:35
Thanks naph, that was excellent!
2008-02-25 12:07:30
indeed, I must admit I was surprised with Kamara going for as much as he did as well. Needless to say as a striker trainer, it's very worrying to be scoreless after 2 games.
2008-02-25 12:25:27
Yeah not scoring bites. I suggest scrapping a defender or two, its what I did.
2008-02-25 12:29:56
Would make a massive difference I think if Augerinos got in form, and I wasn't playing Necevski as a mid for training purposes. Also a few tactical tweaks to be slightly more aggressive wouldn't hurt either so if that means a defender gets removed for an extra striker or midfielder then that might happen.
2008-02-25 13:37:10
Nice one mate. You really do get bored at home :P
2008-02-25 13:40:30
Nah, v-e-r-y slow work day today.

Got back from my week off after having three wisdom teeth out and they were like. "Oh yeah, there's not really much for you to do until X and Y happen... ummm I guess you could read up about Z". Most taxing decision of the day was when to stop eating at morning tea.
2008-02-25 13:48:32
haha nice one, I have to get those teeth out later this year some time too, fun
2008-02-25 16:24:06
nice naph. you must have had extreme periods of boredom to write all this up :P

@cometer: yeah, sucks when your best striker isnt on form... im looking to be a striker trainee, and 2 goals in as many games isnt really encouraging as well
2008-02-26 11:03:58
