Asunto: National Team

2007-12-09 07:08:25
interestingly, we are now 4th in our group after Colombia managed to defeat Mexico last night. Explains where all our bad luck got transferred to....

Still we're only 1 point behind Colombia and as long as we don't have another hiccup against Bulgaria or Dominicana, we should be able to defeat Colombia in the final round and finish ahead of them again. Also gives me confidence that we can perhaps get 3 points against Mexico if Colombia did.

Going to use Willis tomorrow?
Or Maras if it's u21?

Anyway, I'm going to make a tactic for Poland's match against Italia tomorrow :-))

When it loses, can i laugh =D?
2007-12-14 23:40:16
yup ^^

though it won't be 1st team...

Not going to use either of them today as it was agreed upon that this is going to be more of a 2nd string match. Should be a few interesting players selected though.

Lineup is set, tactics set. We're ready to roll. Will this be the game where we break our drought and not only score our first goal against England but take the win as well. We shall wait and see. Might be a little tweaking between now and the start of the match as usual if I decide to make last minute changes but for the time being we're all ready.

We've never beaten England but have suffered some pretty horrible results in the past, particularly the debut season of the NT's where we got hammered 10 - 0 twice in a row. Don't think that will happen today but we'll wait and see.

A reasonable performance is what I'd be expecting here. I don't know if we're strong enough to beat them without them making a pretty awful tactical mistake, but then again Slovenija managed to beat them so anything is possible ;).

I think the game is still about 6 hours away give or take so it's still a little bit before we take the field.

Haha I just can't buy a win at the moment. Just when we looked we were going to create a massive upset they bounced back with 2 very late goals. I still think we left about 2 or 3 more goals out there with the amount of clean one on one chances we had but missed.

Still Hirons creates history by being the first to score against England and a hattrick at that. Knew they'd play wide strikers and an attempted offside trap. Was one of the reasons I selected Storey to come on in the 2nd half to try and exploit any fatigue the English defenders had. I think ultimately the change in the game occurred when England made their 3 substitutions, particularly their left side striker and their right winger, both caused us a fair bit of pain.

It was a case of do I leave the wings or don't I. I thought if they decided to use 1 wing well it would give us extra space down the centre for our offense and I thought they'd struggle to land too many crosses (which turned out correct except for a few times which hurt us on the scoreboard).

At the end of the day we had plenty of chances but were unable to finish off. The positive thing is that it's not like a few seasons ago where we couldn't even cause problems for the opposition defenders, because Hirons and Storey certainly made England have to work hard.

A draw I would have settled for before the game, but the way the game went and having a 3 - 1 lead going into the final 10 minutes, it kind of feels almost more like we lost something then won something.

It's a promising start and it shows one of two things or perhaps both.

a) We're getting stronger and more competitive against the higher nations on the back of some quality training from our users, or foreign users with Australian players.

b) England are getting relatively weaker, or aren't improving as fast as other teams and we're catching the gap.

Either way I thought we deserved the win, a few things didn't go to plan as well as I had hoped but we still managed to perform well.

Next week it's Bulgaria and it really is now a must win game given Colombia knocked off Mexico and could potentially do it again.

Lawton in form, wow! :D

England gets weaker and weaker - no more 'awesome' when they had good players because of having 100+ users when being 1st new country.
Also, they're only good coach was gibbage. Now it's weaker and weaker with tactics :(

Also, Australia is getting strikers. At last! No more Hrehoresins or Newhill's, that had only striker skill...

And defence improved- Sriram remembers who played 4 seasons ago in 1st team.

But wingers are better too...Willis, Leijer, Thompson...not North, Zdrilic, Timpano...or Whitehouse...;]

ps. got 10:1 against Italy :))

Hirons did butcher a few chances but I was pretty happy with the 1st goal and even more so with the 2nd. (Can't count on shots from that far out going in too often)

3 of 9 is a better return than I've been getting out of him this season that is for sure :P
2007-12-16 05:42:21
Yeah it wasn't Hirons I was concerned about because he contributed with as you say some cracker shots. Choony missed an almost gimmie almost straight after they scored, and Storey missed a couple as well and almost managed to poach back the win in the 90th which would have been nice.

I haven't seen the game, but to come away with a draw I am very impressed. Next time we will definitely beat them, as I believe we will have a few extra (minor) positives on our side :D

Well done mate

That double header of 10-0 wins were two of my favourites ;)
2007-12-16 09:50:23
I'm sure it was. Wasn't so fun for myself or other Aussies watching it at the time :(.
2007-12-16 10:09:59
Yes it was. IIRC it led to crazykicka to quit.

I miss those good old days though.

I thought the reason crazykicka quit was due to lack of time since he was moving onto university or something like that ;).

Those days weren't too bad, well they were for our NT, but club wise I didn't mind smashing bots every week, but in general I think I'm having more fun now then I did then, simply cause I'm playing against harder opponents and there's a lot more activity in our forums then their use to be, well except for the amount of transfer ads we use to get before we became a closed forum.
