Well things are sorted out. Lots of discussion between Achmid and myself, probably close on a 2 hour discussion of just player selection and that's not counting the time spent on discussing tactics.

I'm a bit 50-50 on this one, as opposed to usually being 100% behind the tactic. I'm really not sure how this is going to end up but Achmid was fairly convinced it was the best approach given the situation, so it could be interesting.

Lietuva have a really strong U21 side, just need to watch their U20 match against Eesti to understand we're going to be up against it.

A new look side with the majority of first timers makes up our side.

Don't ever expect to beat Lietuva, they have always proven to be too strong but we'll give it our best shot.

End of the day, the worst that should happen is a loss and we move on to next week.

next week...
is that when you get elected again?
:)

the election looks fairly straighforward this year imo :)
2008-02-16 08:58:21
so did last season, and I still only won by 1 vote, so I'm not going to comment :p.

with their tactic and us putting out no wide defenders, they were always going to score from crosses from the wings to the middle.

they almost totally dominated the midfield, despite us playing 4? CMs, and the goals they conceded were through some silly mistakes on their part. credit to the youngsters for converting the chances too.

an encouraging display from the defense, and a couple of nice runs, especially by maras :P

well we ended up going down 4-2. Probably a little unlucky it wasn't 4-3 though. Few things I didn't quite get right, attacking throw ins weren't meant to be square, I have no idea why that happened, they were meant to be throwing backwards, as a result they got marked. Defensive throws from corners led to a lot of their goals, should have been a little more aggressive with placement of the players to cover the simple throw. Gave them about 1-2 goals right there I think.

Other than that, we created almost as many chances as they did.

I guess also the strikers seemed to stop midway which is surprising as they were meant to keep running, but I'll take a look at the tactic in closer detail to work out what happened there along with the attacking throws. Most likely was my own simple error.

Yes indeed, that was why I was 50-50 about it. However, we weren't going to score if I played wingbacks (which was my initial idea). Similarly a back 4 would have resulted in the same thing, so I did the only other thing possible which is turn it into an attack fest. I also tried to block the passes coming in and considering it is an U21 game I didn't think their wingers would land too many crosses on heads but rather would try to pass along the ground, and I blocked a lot of those passes in. (Classic example is look at Zdrilic's crossing ratio and he's what 23-24 now?)

The goals they got were really from not having throw in placements right in the defensive corner, and the occasional dribble through a defender.

Edit: I'll also add we had MORE possession if only by 1%, however, that was ALWAYS going to happen because I left the wingers alone, so they'd hold the ball for a longer period of time. Don't read much into possession, pith when sides play wingers. I'd also say their midfield didn't totally dominate ours either, think that's a bit harsh considering what I've already mentioned ;).

Finally check the stats and look at what they've got as against us, then you'll understand why it wouldn't have mattered what tactic we played.

Quite odd to playwith 3 defs against Lietuva, whose main weapon in u21 are wingers[at least as far as I know].

Nice that Maras got another goal, looks like he doesn't have a curse on himself like Byers does :P

And...my eyes...please no more almost same outfits of both teams...;)

Yeah I know, in an official game for points, I'd be less likely to try something like that, but it almost worked. Had we played 5 at the back, we wouldn't have had any attacking power, would have been swamped in midfield and crushed anyway. For an example of this check Eesti v Lietuva 2 weeks ago.
Also 3 of the 4 goals came from the throw ins not being right iirc, and another one was pure class.

Had Wilkin nailed that fk which almost went in, then had Kearton nailed the one at the end it would have been 4-4. Sure they can say similar things but their first goal was a bit streaky to beat Deeley when it was virtually right on top of Deeley (least going by the viewer :p)
2008-02-16 09:52:52
I'm not saying it worked bad etc. but it was odd :)) anyway a nice game. And who is Kearton anyway, haven't seen him before? :p
2008-02-16 09:52:52
The main problem was that the execution was a bit sloppy in patches regarding throws mostly, had I set that better it might have been a much closer game.

Waiting for more criticism (I mean feedback :p) to come. Would like to have a few different opinions, although I know the general consensus and knew it would be that even before we started the match :p.
2008-02-16 09:58:23
Indeed it was odd, which is why I argued about it for ages. However, that's probably better than to be predictable and stick 5 men behind the ball and sacrifice our chances of scoring. Their defenders are pretty impressive also stopping both Maras and Kearton both who aren't weak players. Was probably a little disappointed we didn't pass more to Kearton when their def got sent off and use that advantage but that's life :p.
2008-02-16 10:01:46
Kearton is TigerTUFF's young gun. (Playing with the two Carl's, Richter and Storey)

You'll see plenty of him if we play many U21 games this season.

I'd agree that the throw-ins was the killer. I imagine with the secondaries on our U21 defenders we have to cover the wings as we're going to spend a lot of the time kicking the ball out of bounds. Given the throw-in situation I thought 2-4 was quite a good result. In fact regardless, 2-4 with the chances we had, against that opposition is a pretty good result.
2008-02-16 10:06:10
Yeah, I know Richter and Storey but this one is new to me :) Must remember him :)

@cometer
about the red card...I had this kinda game against me:

Looks like the mids just can't see that there is no def anymore...anyway one of my favourite games, watch how the off mid played :))

Yeah we're going to kick a lot out, so in future I need to be extra careful with the defensive throws, especially close to the corner flag.

Was a bit annoyed at myself actually because I'm normally quite successful with throw ins and it can turn a game if you have them right.

Mangos was kind of eaten by their winger who saw 17% of the offensive work, and he only actually played due to Poiser being in extremely low form.

Still that's our U21 side and most of the side is U20, so give another year training to each of them and we might find ourselves with a decent U21 side by next season.
