Hi cometer, I've seen the match and I apologize for Gardiner's service :)...
But don't you think his position (and the one of the other "wing") was a bit too hybrid?
He seemed always out of the game, he didn't help in DEf, nor in Att, since the Forwards often come back to the midfield to take the ball, stealing it to the wing...
He run in vain a lot :)
Clearly his form didn't help him, but maybe leaving him a bit higher he could have bring some more troubles to their defenders...
Of course I don't want to criticize or teach anything, is just to speak :)

he doesn't have enough passing to be a full winger, nor does he have the technique or pace. Similarly he doesn't have sufficient defending to warrant being able to come back to support and defend, although I still made him do so in the lower defensive areas.

That leaves you with the option of trying to go wide to stretch defenses then pass back infield but it just didn't happen today.

Just out of curiosity was Simon McDermott in the mix for the midfield?

I went to check his stats and received them but his passing wasn't anywhere near the mark.

Haereiti isn't 21 as much as you'd like him to be :p.

I think that in an U21 match Formidable Speed and Tech are enough, maybe he lack in passing (and form as I said) :)

NO :) this isn't enough (everybody will agree) :) but you make with what you have under the hand

I've been coach of Italy last season and we had only 2 players with that skills at half season...
And we're speaking about one of the biggest sokker Nation, so I think you have to reduce your expectations if you want to make career ;)
