Wouldn't call it overconfidence personally, I would call it poor finishing. 4/15 and 1/9 isn't really the conversion rate we needed. Most of the shots we had should have been regulation find the back of the net.

Normally if we get 26 shots we bury at least 8, especially when Stephenson gets 9 shots he usually scores about 5 or 6 alone.

Another one of those goalkeeper wins battle ;).

Only other option on hindsight would have been to push the defense further forward and to drop one out of the defense but I wondered if they were going to try to use 2 wingers against us like they have against other opponents.

They cut out a lot of our attacks but we still generated a large percentage of chances. I'll settle for a 5-0, although it is short of what I aimed for and I'm positive Austria will surpass that.

First major shake up so far has occurred with Uruguay knocking off Lietuva. For those wanting to grab the final 3 spots you're going to have to win against one of the top 2 seeds, as Uruguay have already got 3 extra points and Island has a really easy group with 2 relatively new sides on their group.

A win against Austria thus becomes important for our chances to qualify. They're not an easy side to take on, for those who thought they were easy to beat only need to look at the result they got last night against Belgium. In saying that though, I'm still convinced we can pick them off at least once.

I was just teasing...

On our hand we call it poor finishing, on their hand they call it great goal keeping...

It's a bit like playing TGS, it is a question of carpet bombing the net and hoping a few get passed. With 26 shots, you just did that... It was clear damage limitation was on their mind tactic wise.

The ":p" suggested as much :p

Quite true. Hopefully their keeper can have another blinder against Austria in a few weeks time :).

Yeah, had they used either of their 2 common tactics, the margin would have possibly been greater. Still a win's a win and is sure better than a draw or loss. There's already teams struggling to qualify from poor starts or poor draws or a combination of both, so the fact that we should still be in it up until the final qualification round, suggests we're doing something right.

Next week is a match scheduled against Cymru (Wales) where as it stands will be a side made from division II and under with no 1st XI members playing. Should be an interesting match and gives a chance for those in lower divisions with Australian players a chance of grabbing some NT glory ;).

Oh no! I've injured Eric Kohler! Bad strikers!! Bad!

13 day injury, so he may just get right for Republica Domininana.

Getting everything set for the match against Cymru. Just dropped 12 players to make space for the players coming in for the match. Most of those dropped will be put back in straight after the match tonight.

Everything is set and ready to go against Cymru with players from div II and lower. A bit of an uneven distribution with II.01 and II.04 having the majority of players, whilst barely a drop anywhere else. No true 1st XI members are present in tonight's match but I still think we've got a fairly strong side capable of knocking off their 2nd XI. 11 clubs have players playing in tonight's game so the distribution on the club side is much more even. No side has more than 2 players in the game.

The lineup is as follows: The aim was to make a competitive side fairly strong in general but to give a decent spread of players across teams.

1. Wesley Lewis (Teen Girl Squad) - II.04
2. Aaron Budin (meamegamogamegan) - III.08
3. Daniel Borg (Krayzee Coconuts) - II.03
4. Nicholas Spencer (Achmid Soul) - II.04
5. Cormac Maras (Gondor Guardians) - II.01
6. Iain Bourke (Losers) - II.01
7. Gareth Tarka (Losers) - II.01
8. Bradley Ielati (Da Minkees) - II.04
9. Travis Healy (Real Galah) - II.04
10. Talon Kearton (FCM tigers) - II.04
11. Ryan Gibson (FCM tigers) - II.04

12. Nick Balabanel (Da Minkees) - II.04
13. Vaughan Micevski (Gondor Guardians) - II.01
14. Damien Pondeljak (Achmid Soul) - II.04
15. George Vieri (Taigum Terriers) - II.04
16. Richard Ellem (Devil's Angels United) - II.01

Subs are basically Pondeljak on for Ielati at 60th minute, Ellem on for Gibson at 60th minute, Tarka to take FK's and Kearton to take penalties.

So looking for an interesting game where hopefully we can take a win by a few goals.

Few issues in that tactic today, defense dropped back too much which is something I wasn't expecting to have happen as quickly as it did. Also at times we left a lot of space in front of our 2 dm's which we could have exploited a little better, although the idea was to stretch their defense out wide to open up holes in their defense.

Anyway that appeared to be pretty much their 1st XI side out there today. In the end we still had enough firepower to take the game, a few sloppy performances by some of the players where a lot of our players with high pace seemed extremely sluggish.
2009-02-07 13:31:22
strangely enough, they seemed more lively after the substitutions...

MotM i would say are tied between lewis and tarka. DMs didn't seem to do much, but that's probably because of the tactics ;)

Yeah but that may have something to do with Welsh players tiring, although being their 1st XI I'd be a little surprised if they had stamina issues in any of the players.

Least Ellem gave them a few problems where Gibson couldn't.
2009-02-07 13:37:00
just compared the stats between gibson and ellem.... shouldn't have had such a major gap in the difference made in the match given gibson's skills and about the same form...
2009-02-07 13:43:56
Ellem came on at a time when players were tiring and Ellem was fresh, so that could have been the difference between the performances. Thought the most sluggish out there were Budin,Spencer and Bourke (but Bourke did get slightly injured which would explain the sluggishness).

Edit: Nobody saw that first sentence ;) because it wasn't the case as it turned out in both parts :p.

I must say, I never expected to see Pondeljak play another match for Australia, but there he was :)

needed someone rounded enough to hold down a defensive midfield position for the last segment of the game and given other players forms hurt their chance of playing.
