Asunto: National Team

A tough start to the mini world cup against a strong opponent.

México 7-0 Australia

A dominant performance by our much-fancied rivals who somehow managed to miss out on the world cup despite a top 32 ranking. After three games in the job I've learnt two key things...
1. Not being able to see the skills of some of our best players because they're owned by managers who won't provide info makes things very hard!
2. NT tactics are at another level and I have a steep learning curve ahead of me.

In good news, the hardest pool game is now done and he next two matches are winnable. This week we have...

Ghana - : - Australia

What about young team??? Now is 2 wins 1 lose;)

It’s a win, but not a great performance.

Ghana 1-2 Australia

In a game I expected to win I played a much more adventurous tactic. A few too many offsides and an injury to our best midfielder were the lowlights. A lack of quality in defence is making it hard to play with 4 at the back so some creative thinking is required.
It’s a 2-0-2 record so far under my stewardship, still getting my head around the Nat tactics.

Next up is the last pool match of the mini World Cup.

Group C
| 1C | 6 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 |13| 1 | México
| 2C | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 6 | 2 | Ghana
| 3C | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 8 | Australia
| 4C | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 1 |11| Costa Rica
week 4 | 7:0 | México - Australia
week 4 | 0:5 | Costa Rica - Ghana
week 5 | 1:6 | Costa Rica - México
week 5 | 1:2 | Ghana - Australia
week 6 | : | Ghana - México
week 6 | : | Australia - Costa Rica

It’s likely that a very strong México will take a third win, so in all likelihood a draw against Costa Rica should get us through to the knockout round.

Australia - Costa Rica... place your bets

The win is the most important thing, the goals can come later.

Nice work, almost qualified for the knockout rounds.

Show them what Australia has got.

Australia 3-3 Costa Rica

A disappointing finish to the mini world cup with a draw in a game we deserved to win. With injuries to our best defender and midfielder keeping them out of the eleven, our depth was tested, particularly in defense where we are VERY thin on resources.

With a very strong Mexico easily winning the group, the draw left us equal with Ghana on points, however they go through on goal difference helped largely by them taking a 5-0 walkover win earlier in the group stage.

We now move back into friendlies, we are scheduled to play Bosnia this week which will be a very tough matchup (as long as they accept the match). Starting players Brooks, Thwaite and Farmer are all on the long term injury list.

Australia 2-6 Bosna i Hercegovina

A stern test against a team ranked 20+ spots above us. Some key injuries and a lack of quality defensive players is really making this tough... the rest of the squad is actually pretty darn good.

Anyone training defenders?

Next up we play another friendly, this time against Kypros. This is a pretty even matchup so will be a good test to see where we are. Working against us though is the injury list... four players out of action, three of them from the best eleven.

I'm training defenders. Thanks for the A-League stats too

Awesome... do you have four or five NAT level defenders ready to come off the production line? ;)
2019-04-16 06:26:56
Lol I wish. I have two who will be there in a few seasons (I hope) and then 2 more who are preparing for their U21 debut maybe next season or the one after

Bonjour!
I’m currently travelling through the French countryside for a month so my updates will be less frequent. I’ll still be around but less likely to post match recaps and sadly less time to scout teams for upcoming friendlies. I’m conscious that so far I’ve done an average (at best) job with Nat results but still learning the tactical side at this level which is very different.

Enjoy France & bon chance on your travels. Some great areas to experience. :)

Hayastan 3-3 Australia

Solid result away against a team ranked 13 places above us. Won possession and had more shots which was pleasing and a higher defence trapped them offside well.

I’m off to a wine festival in Chinon, France now. Aurevoir.
