Malaysia - Australia 7:2

A stinker of a result against a team 7 spots ahead of us in the rankings. 1-1 at half time and performing well, and then we get yet another red card at the start of the second half and it all goes to shite.

Yeah that was rough. Was a good game until you lose a central defender to a red card. A card anywhere else, the match can be saved, but a central defender red ruins you straight away

Having a few issue setting friendlies?
2020-07-19 07:33:02
Nope. Had two weeks unscheduled so chose to leave them that way rather than try and find an opponent as I’ve been working 80hr weeks and wouldn’t have been able to invest the time on a tactic. I’ve rolled off that ghastly covid project now and am taking a week off work so back to normal.
2020-07-19 08:24:34
Oh nice work, glad that's over!

Yeah I've been tossing up whether to leave the free weeks blank or not, but then decided a friendly at least gives some training (and experience, but really, does that actually do much? I never look at someones experience prior to buying).

McPharlin is getting itchy feet :D

Also as soon as the season is over, promote Fihaki to the side. You will see him on the TL. Whilst I can't see someone firing him, better to be safe than sorry because he will continue to give Newton a run for his money (And although farmer is pretty good, not sure he will be their level)

Yeah. My thinking is that while our stocks are so low empty weeks are a chance to not lose ranking points. Will need to be very selective with choosing friendly opponents.
2020-07-19 11:42:33
I'm not sure our stocks are going to get that much better any time soon. Plus the lower we go, the quicker it will rise once they do improve :)

Also by playing matches, you are guaranteeing those players get 100% training and not 75-90% depending on whether they play friendlies or league matches. It isn't much, but over say 3 seasons, you are looking at between 5 and 12 weeks worth of training (league vs friendly), if you count a week as 100% (but in reality, a week is either 90% or 75%).

If we use the player - plays league matches only every week - 90% training. 3 seasons of NT = 48 weeks. So he gets 10% x 48 lots of training = 480% more. this is just over 5 weeks worth of training, or maybe 3/4 of a skill. Not huge, but something.

If we use the player - plays friendly matches every week - 75% training - 3 seasons of NT = 48 weeks. So he gets 25% x 48 = 1200% more. this is 16 weeks worth of "friendly" training = 1.5-2 skill points more.

Now those figures are just taken from sokker asistente, and there are a lot of variations out there because we really don't know (In Aus, we used to use 95% for league, 90% for friendly as the numbers, so very different). But in the end, just pointing out over a long period of time, the training can outweigh the loss of ranking points.

BUT in saying that, when life is tough, or you are borderline of two pots for the world cup, then skipping weeks can be very advantageous for either personal sanity, or for the teams WC pot, both of which are important.

So this post is not having a go, I have missed weeks because the idea of scouting, with life being busy, was just too much, just pointing out the difference with long term loss of matches, which is not what you are planning, but interesting to read and consider none the less. I have also made the executive decision on those weeks, looking through the invites, that a match is not in our best interest, and no match would be better, and that is part of what comes with the territory of being an NT coach, which is why I did these calculations in the first place a while back (but knowing every "week lost" of training, is actually even more important for juniors as they pop so much quicker).

Patrick Harnwell currently on the market.

I suspect (hope?) he's not NT material, but he did play 8 games for the U21's.

Two of the old favourites! Butera has sadly slipped down the pecking order, but Osman still gets a game given our very limited selection of defenders.

Nice win Agbell.

But c'mon, another McPharlin injury. I normally wouldn't care too much, but he is the only reason I'm training pace, so his constant injuries mean I'm training pace longer than I have too :(

(This is not a post to say stop playing him in the NT, if he stays fit, it will help him with his training, was just bad luck).
