Possible, it’s a very similar method. Way to test that would be goal kicks unless that has a special case. Otherwise it becomes a little harder as you’d need a situation where you’re in the same square but your players do something differently depending on where on the square you either have the ball or not.
Both of you presented some strong cases here that seem to make a lot of sense.
I always had a different point of view. Players do not stand in the same spots on the park as in the editor but they 'go further' with their positions by predicting where does the ball go or they already know where it goes before the ball even gets there. The easiest example here are goal kicks you mentioned. Even though the ball is in the square closest to the goal, players place themselves like it was exactly in the centre.
Now, when I think of it, that might not be the best example but I think you get what I meant :)

There is definitely some aspect where players "predict" where the ball is going (ie you know when the next player will fumble because your player runs on a weird angle which only makes sense after the fumble), however I'd say about them standing in positions, it is more the player with the ball tries to pass the ball to the position they are set, otherwise we wouldn't see so many times where the player is completely out of position to receive a pass (because it's the pass that is bad, not the players position as it would be if they were trying to predict.).
As for testing it, I'm pretty sure we did a lot of that in the past, but the best ways to test are from throwins. For agbell/my method, it's difficult to test because it's only a subtle change, but with the method you describe cometer, you could make positions vastly different between two adjoining squares in the tactic manager, or even completely different people near the ball, and then see what happens

Well yeah my suggestion showed that with throws. Also cost us 4 goals of the 7. You can see that easily on the 2d that our riht corner defense just above the last square resulted in the setup for the corner square instead. That’s why I raised the point. It’s also why I suppose I’ve been known to have been good tactically from throw setups as I’ve been using this strategy for those.
I'm pretty sure I learned my thinking from you telling me my current beliefs back in the day, thus without stating it flat out, was wondering whether you were remember wrong from back in the day as it doesn't sound quite right (unless the explanation has sounded one way but you meant another)
It's 11pm here and I just finished fixing the tactics. Hoping for a good score and that these last 4 hours watching their games over and over again and placing our players, won't be a wasted time. This is the most important game in the Asian Cup group phase, we have to win this.
Good luck Vampyr, I hope the work pays off. When it does pay off its a great feeling
And that’s exactly why I had to forego being Nat manager. Takes so much time to do it the right way! Good luck.
Again the same. Tactics didn't work bad I guess. Still the same issue - the defenders. They couldn't have tackled the ball even frontly, when on the other side of the park their def a had no problems with it, even from behind. Their strikers did what they wanted to do.
We had even more 1vs1s than India even if the match stats don't show it. Check out the game - they made 2 shots with almost each goal, so there it goes their 4 shots and we have an even game.
Waiting for your comments.
Defs - could've gone a little higher but it might have ended with a total disaster, considering the fact they couldn't have made a proper tackle. Also, I 'fkd up' the lowest square what was seen with the 4th goal.
Mids - they had well placed strikers a few times but decided to play back to the defs covered by the strikers. Lohy lost the ball so many times I stopped counting after first 30'.
Strikers - went almost exactly as I planned - in the same line with the half-side mids after transporting the ball from the other side of the park. The issue here is that they didn't play thru passes as often as possible, even they had so many opportunities to do so.

Cheers mate. Congrats on the great score against Chile as well!
Finally! Something worked just like I expected. Decent game and tactics, I think.
I'm gonna share jy feeling about the game as soon as I cool down a little bit. I'm so pissed off you can't even imagine. This game is a god damn joke.
Will watch this later because the last few results seem to have been good (though haven’t watched them either as I hadn’t found the time) but anytime you give away 25 shots you’re going to struggle to win. Their team on paper looks pretty decent though.
