So let's play a game :)
You can look upon my Ishida, he have talent 3,55. He's close to pop in passing (~5GT) and other skills are after pop. Would You go for a DEF/MID/ATT with him? :) I've got responses from achmid and cometer + some guys from Polish forums, but want to validate it against Your opinion :)

If the talent is secure... if he was my player I wouldn't be coaching him for def... I will look for something more. If you train for mid , early next season the player may look like this:
5 0
12 ( 12 gt ) 9 ( 11 gt + 1 basic training )
9 ( 11 gt + 1 basic ) 8 ( 11 gt + 1 basic )
9 ( 3 gt + 9 basic ) 8
That's not bad, because at the start of 21 , the player can look - 13/10/10/10/10 . Maybe ++ underlevels on some of the skills. I think it's achievable by the end of 21 player to become - 13/11/12/11/11 . That's a good base. But there are two issues here. Are you ready to coach the player to a late age? Because you know,a midfielder takes longer to train. And the next one - it's not up to you,but you have to realize that two longer injuries can significantly hamper what you have planned. The advantage here is that you do not have to chase the highest levels, which will buy you time. Pace to 16 , defense - 15 , technique - 15 , passing - 16 , play - 16. I think something like this is achievable in a normal training process. But , I'll say it again - as long as randoms don't get in your way with a few injuries. Because I've seen superplayers get ruined because of a few long term injuries. I've always been afraid of exactly that, because here you train 5 skills and always walk on the razor's edge.
Much less risky to train him to be a striker :)) Although here you are looking for the highest levels , You train three skills :)) You have the basis for a striker. You can make it 3x18 in my opinion. It will even be a striker, who has a high level defense. And by the end of 27 you will most likely be done with training , which would free you up to train .
Most importantly - I wish you to protect the player from injuries. Play him in safe tactics in friendlies + 30 min official match - that's enough for him. Do whatever is up to you. And hope the randoms are not against you. Injuries decide how far a player will go.
Good luck!!! :)

Based on my calculations, he won't reach 17/17/17 at the age of 27, so it will be hard to make him a decent Striker, not to mention MID. Current plan is to get him to 14 pace by the end of this season and then decide what will be next steps for him :)
But as You've said, any injury will be problematic for him. When it comes to MID training I can say I know a few things about that - Anton Petrov [38072297] ;)

If the player has a talent of 3.5 and has no injuries, at the end of 27 it will be 3x18. Until the end of the season + week 0 there are 12 training sessions. 2 speed levels are not a problem. You will even pick up something else. If after every third training session you play a goal, for example, you will raise 2 levels or you will be very close to the second.
For a midfielder it will be really difficult. 1 or 2 injuries will ruin it. But he will become a striker. There was a table and it was believed that a player with a talent of 3.5 must have a minimum of 28 points at the beginning of 19 in order to be able to become 3x18. You have trained the most difficult skill to lift, so you should succeed.
So....On Saturday we play against Georgia. My idea is to leave out some key players who are hanging with cards. This mostly applies to Terje. I have an idea how to compensate so that we score more goals. Still the goal difference is important. But I would like us to jump against France with the best.
10 goals... I think it could have been a bit more... At the beginning of the second half we had a hole of about 15 minutes. I think our threshold with that lineup was around 13-14 goals. But,the important condition we fulfilled it - I hope there are no more injured players,it became a bit much. I'll be happy if the two updates go well and we try to do something against France. In the next two games we will "clash" with the two best teams. The outcome of these two games will give us an indication of where we are at the moment and if we have the potential for something more. I hope we come out of these two games with honour.
Good result. Comet youth controlling the front line and midfield - 8 of the 10 goals and 3 of the 4 assists. Could always be more but double digit wins you will always take if you get the chance.
Nice win. It was expected but it's not always easy to actually convert in to double digit wins.
I'll have to hire in some my physiotherapists for Burke and Schofield so that there's less of a Comets presence on the field. It feels dirty

I had a quick look at the midfielders, to see if any might be good targets. Scuderi looks good, who owns him... Comets. Hmm, how about Renaud... also Comets. Haha
Nice result. Well done penetrating the invisible shield that sometimes appears in lopsided games. We roll on.

Ha yeah then Greenwood as a striker is also mine. Crampton was also mine until I sold them to TMP.
Renaud and Scuderi are both pretty impressive but I think we have a few in a similar position now (Schofield being very similar to both of those)

Well done. Interesting use of Sevin in the forward line. What’s the thinking there? Not a criticism, just curious.
Needed someone that wasn’t a Comets player in the front half of the field :p
He did not play as a striker :) When the tactics turned as a third striker entered Boyd.
Ah ok. Got it. The match summary shows the starting lineup, but standing in the formation of the finishing tactic. I see now he was deployed as a holding midfielder under the tactic at the start of the match.
Unfortunately, we lost an important player for the match on Saturday. Christian Renaud will miss the match due to injury.
