Instead of revealing more of the code, I'll give a hint as to how it can be solved. The world is your friend here. You identify what I'm referring to here and you should be able to crack it.

I'm guessing that Y in the code wasn't successfully encoded.

Yeah but there's a reason for it being that way, so it wasn't an actual mistake but rather a deliberate mistake as Y didn't fit into the code so I gave the letter away instead. So everyone has 1 letter of the code.

One thing I did change though was some of the characters to avoid potential confusion. So the code changed slightly but not much.

Now I'm confused. You changed "82,44,84" into "93,94,98" and then "44,82,84" into "94,98,93"

Yep, although I was hoping you hadn't determined precisely the ones I changed :p. Everything still works out though.

As you release more clues, can you unscramble some of the code too? Might get more nibbles.

by variety do you mean as in different orders (DEF, MID, ATT) or different roles in that position (CM, DM, winger)?

I did say position, but to make it clearer it's referring to the latter of your statement.
