Asunto: National Team U21

With the new U21 National Teams being announced, I figured it was time to make an official thread.

Obviously between now and the elections there will be a lot of Q's asked about how it will all work and in particular who will be running for the right to be the coach of the U21's.

We have all been waiting a long time for this enhancement in the game, and I believe it will add a whole new aspect to getting people interested in the National team process.

Anyway, that is the first post complete, and may the next few hundreds of pages be just as riveting.

The main thing for u21 coach is to book friendlies at first season with weakest teams possible. Every NT starts from same ranking amount, this means it doesn't matter whether Australia beats Polska or Kirgistan. It will give us same amount of points. Thanks to this system Australia should be high in ranks for qualifications time and what goes with it - should be able to qualify.

it's based on the same ranking points system but everyone will start at 1600 like the senior NT's did. Thus true strength isn't countered for at the beginning and so taking on "weaker" opponents results in more points gained early on before they plummet to where they should be ranked.

I'd imagine it would have been better to start the U21 teams at the same points as their national team. I don't see that doing that would be particularly unfair, its going to approximate where teams should end up anyway.

Not so sure it would actually. Our U21 side is going to fall in ranking points to I suspect 1400-1500, whilst I think other U21 sides such as Sverige will rise.

I think there's a very big difference between senior and U21 and you'll notice the sides with the big user bases cleaning up whilst those with small user bases will struggle. Sure some of the top teams will remain the same but a lot of the rest will be in different areas.

I think giving everyone a 1600 start isn't too bad an idea anyway, the rankings will quite quickly fall into the right place.

Yeah I know, but I think managers of the lower ranked teams will use the 1st XI ranking as a guide anyway. I've been knocked back for U21 matches this season already for similar things even though I know our U21 side is a long way short of our senior side and I'm expecting our U21 to be more mid table then our senior side. I also think there will be sides after knocking off those that get the cheap wins early to give more ranking boost and there will be those who want to play challenging opposition to have a challenging match.

I don't know whether the picture will be as black and white as borkos pointed out, although if you can work it that way then for sure your suggestion would work. Just like it's a similar issue with NT seeding when a new NT comes in end of season and gets ranked too highly.

I'd seriously keep on playing weak teams. Maybe one term for New Zealand....it would be first official 'derby' with this NT..;)

True, although I have other duties outside of that too ;). Whatever happens, it promises to be an interesting election.

it sure will be an interesting election - the choice.. go for the Nr1 Aussie job, U21 job or Malaysian Nr1 Job... hmmm gives me a good opportunity to come back and work at home instead of overseas... but do I want to continue on with the work ive been doing over there?
