Asunto: National Team U21
Simply amazing performance. Carved up the opposition and completely stuffed them in the process. Quarter finals for the first time ever for either of our NT and totally deserved in the process. Last 30min got incredibly wobbly, perhaps a few defender subs may have been useful but we held firm and live to fight another day. So happy for yourself and for the rest of this community for the continued efforts put into our NTs. Amazing ranking points gained tomorrow. Thought we were suppose to be easy ;).
Great success! Turkey had one of the strongest teams of the tournament. Candidats for the title were. A unique performance!
Guess we can’t hide anymore :(
Just one more would be the dream so we get a cup against our NT. Probably unlikely but it’s been an amazing run. Pity whoever tries to run for the u21s next season when Achmid steps down. Going to be an impossible act to follow.

Wooo moved up to rank 24.
For this Quarterfinal of the world cup we play Austria. They beat their previous opponent 8-1 in the 1/8 final.
We go in to this game as the underdogs, as we have done some for pretty much every game, so the pressure being off is always good, but let's see if we can keep this wild ride going

At this stage whoever you play is going to be extremely tough to play and we’re probably on borrowed time but I have to say if I had to choose which of our opponents we wanted this was 1 of 2.
For anyone who has players playing in the current u21 team, I would ask that you minimise playing time to just that which is required for training, in an attempt to stop injuries.
Also making sure your stadium has top level grass in top condition is meant to help

Great work Achmid. hope to have a defeder join ponting next season
Thanks for all the kind words all.
For anyone reading this and not knowing where the u21NT is as, it has been a wild ride but a fun one.
Our most recent victory was against Turkey, who were ranked #3 prior to us getting a 3:1 win against them with a 14:12 shot count in our favour despite giving up a 4.4 rating point difference. Within their own forums there was a lot of talk about it being a good draw and an easy team to beat. Hell the same was said in other forums about being disappointed not to draw us.
We went in to the game missing one of our best DEFs due to a red card, a 1st teamer MID due to injury (still injured) and a reserve ATT (who would have been subbed on) due to injury (still injured).
The odds were very much against us, and only 1 person tipped us to win within the Polish tipping comp (and noone in another countries tipping comp). Pretty sure the one in poland was a mistake but maybe it was a good better given they were from Norge and saw us play them in the group stage.
Thankfully our strikers did what they had to do and we knocked out the highest ranked team to be knocked out so far, taking us through for the first time ever by any Australian team to the 1/4 finals.
For this, we really wanted to avoid having to taking on ranks 1 or 2 (Poland or Romania) and which we didn't get our preferred opponent in Croatia, we have drawn Austria, coached by an ex-Aus NT coach Jurro.
As has been the case for a while, we go in to this match as underdogs with the weakest actual team, but with a good combination of tactics we have managed to beat harder teams. Currently we have 0 tips our way from the same tipping comp for our match against Austria, and in fact, whenever our team has come up, it's been that way (including from users who know just how well we can outperform our strength), with the exception of against Norge I think, where it was pretty even
Whilst Austria is arguably an easier match up than Turkey, they are still stronger and have many more users to pull and train youths which shows just how well this community has done working together to get these results.
For a bit of history, thanks to Gestons great sokker tables, we can see exactly how Australia stacks up against other countries.
The u21 team based on world cup results ranks 45th, probably a fair kind of rank based on population size, with a previous best of making it to the 1/8 finals, a wonderful achievement by uberfurious way back in the day.
If we were to get knocked out at this 1/4 final stage, it would move us up to rank 39, above Danmark but below Venezuela. Dare to dream and make it to the semis would put us to 26th ahead of Canada who had just one incredible run in the past.
In the overall Australia records (NT + u21) we are ranked 52nd, 3 places behind NZ :O
Thankfully our current run will move us up to 45th, and again, dare to dream, a semi final birth would move us to 38th, ironically 1 spot ahead of Austria
I believe both Austria and ourselves would be happy with the draw we got, and it's sure to be a good game. Try to save those players from playing any extra minutes they don't need to if possible (and if possible for first teamers, not play the friendly Friday), and let's see how long we can stay on this ride for. We are already to last team standing from both our qualification and group stages, and the country remaining with the next least amount of users has twice as many as us, so at now rank 24 (highest since the first few matches of u21 inception when we actually had number 1 for a bit) we can see what this weekend brings

If you aussies get silverware, i run after achmid xD
Go go achmid
Go go achmid
One step at a time. Might not get past this match yet, we’re still the least likely to win. Cat stays in the bag.
In the end Austria were too good. We just struggled to get past their defense and they were able to get past ours enough times to matter.
Haven’t seen the report yet but looks like most of our chances came from midfielders rather than strikers so the shot count will be misleading.
In hindsight would have liked to have seen something change, whether tactically, substitutions, anything in the situation we were down by more than a goal. Felt like from last matches with this structure we score early and fall away, and this time we were down early and didn’t get a sniff early enough.
Was a good ride though. Quarter finals is an impressive effort that’s going to be hard to top.
