Asunto: [U21] UBERFurious

2010-03-31 13:04:11
uberfurious [del] para Todos
I have decided to go for the U21. I don't know whether some more experienced managers are going for it, but I'll chuck my hat in until then anyway. If Minkee changes his mind or one of the brain's trust decides to nominate, I will withdraw my candidacy as they are the guys who got us to the world cup and I respect that :) I hope (expect ;) ) that they would still take a role in the team as much or as little as they wanted.

My History:
In my time in sokker (7 seasons) I think I've achieved a lot in a short time. If you look at the Australia statistics, you have to go to sx to find someone with a higher rating than me, and he started over a year before me. Have a look at my history page for a detailed history, but here are some highlights:
In my first season I took the team and then sacked 95% of the squad. I managed to win the league and promote with my newly bought 17 and 18 year old squad. I already had my own tactic, but obviously needed work later ;)
I then spent 3 seasons in III.12 where I started learning some of the deficiencies of my tactics. In my third season I beat the newly demoted from II team, CNF twice in the season to finish undefeated and get promoted to II. My team was predominantly 21 year olds.
Since promoting to Div II.01 I have easily stayed up, even being the worst team in that first season. I am one of the few managers in II that uses different tactics for each match and I believe I have a pretty good understanding of the tactical side of the game.

Some examples of where I have used tactics to overcome superior teams:
Steel Fury 3 – 1 Melbourne Magpies
http://online.sokker.org/comment.php?matchID=10972874
MM Rating = 58.2, SF Rating = 51.7
Used a tight back 3 and 2 DM’s to clog up MM’s central attack. Used a winger to get down the side of their defense and provide the balls to the strikers. Central midfielders were used to cut down the time MM midfield had on the ball.

Steel Fury 3 – Da Minkees 2
SF Rating = 40.8, DM Rating = 48.1
http://online.sokker.org/comment.php?matchID=10699796
See above. They used pretty similar tactics 

Steel Fury 5 – Hornsby 1
SF Rating = 44.2 – Hornsby = 49.2
Played a strange front and back DM arrangement to pick up the two central strikers and centre mids. Played 4 at the back to pick up the slightly low wingers. Played wide strikers to run the channels between the centre backs and wingback and played wide centre att mids to sit in the holes between DM, centre backs and wingbacks.

I won't give you any examples of where my tactics suck and shot myself in the foot. You'll have to find them yourself. :)

My NT experience is limited but I helped out Auldreekie enough at the start of the season to know it is a lot of work. I haven't helped much later in the season, but most of the work was up front getting things sorted out. AR can contradict me here if he wants.... :)

If you have any questions, please ask.

Good luck with the election. I think both vivski and Minkee might agree with me here but whatever you know about tactics before ever having managed a NT side, by the end of a season or two you realise a lot more about tactics then you knew previously. NT management is a completely different aspect and it's one I rank very highly.

U21's are always a good starting point as most times they're similar to your own squads so you already have a grounding for what sort of works and what doesn't.

NT's do take a lot of time if you do them properly, especially initially (after a while it becomes quicker as you get use to the slight differences) but it's time well worth spent if you can afford to as there are lots of things you take away from the experience that are applicable back into your own side.

I'll try to think up some questions for all our candidates so far but good luck with the elections.

That is why I have chosen to go for U21 and not the full national side. I have no experience managing 60+ rating teams. I know enough about tactics to know what I don't know, and I know that the tactics required for those sides is completely different to the 50+ level. I don't think the U21 side would be far off Steel Fury skill levels.

Can you prove it?

U21 is more rewarding and more interesting than the seniors. That's my view and why I got involved in the first place.
The crop of players you have to deal with change every season forcing you to be way more adaptable than at seniors level. As a result you will be forced to change tactic almost every week to be competitive. I've done 3 seasons of it now (2 under Vivski).

The NTDB side of it is a massive time consuming challlenge in itself where you have to track players from way earlier than the seniors. You have to learn quickly to answer the many managers that come to you and ask if their 16 or 17yo will be good enough later. None of this with the NT as they can see who's making the U21 squad and know they will good further down the track.

It's definately a fun place to start if you want to be involve with NTs as a manager rather than an assistant. It's different than managing your club and although this is only a game I took more pride and satisfaction seing the team qualify for the U21 WC than winning anything with my club so far.

And to confirm, I am not changing my mind, I will not be running for election this season. This is not to say that I don't want to be involved in one way or another for next season nor that I won't be coming back for more in 1 or 2 season's time. RL is just giving me enough time to be mod and take care of my team at the moment.

This is probably the best 5 mins of my life:

Depends how you function. It's quite possible to split the database side of things between both NT and U21 NT thus having an equal distribution of the workload. At least that's how I always tried to operate, I actually had to do everything once anyway :p.

I notice that uber is in all caps in your nomination thread...

Just how furious are you?

You misunderstood me.
The NT manager has his workload cut by the U21 manager when it comes to scout young talent.

I never noticed I was all lower case. My proper, fake (:P) internet name is UBERFurious. My friends call me uber. :D

edit: My login name is UBERFurious. Weird its in lowercase on the game....

Hmmm... :P But good on ya, Uber!

And OMG, that youtube video - I can still remember jumping up and down in front of the TV for that! (and for the penalty shootout against Uraguay.)

Yeah fair point but even that can be distributed to lessen the burden (admittingly it does tend to fall more toward the U21 manager now that we've got them).

for sure but sometimes there isnt discussion... anyway back on topic, it's Uber's place for his election :)
