I just sold Seweryn Toper.
Toper was one of the striker trainees Cloete helped me buy, just 2 weeks after I joined sokker.
I think he was 17yo back then and looked very average.
He's played div IV, III, II & A-League; scoring 213 goals in his 140 official matches.
Sold for $1.4M, well above the 24k I paid for him in 2006 (almost sent me broke at the time).
I also just sold Paulin Michel. Not quite as momentus... he's possibly the worst keeper ("excellent") ever to play A-League. However, in S16 he conceded just 24 goals, almost keeping an undermanned TMP in the top league.
End of an era at TMP.

Good old memory lane :)
I just went back and had a look at my first match in A-League (a 6-1 pasting by Cometer on the 6th Aug 2006).
My GK at the time was an excellent GK youth pull named Craig Rech. Rech wasn't replaced until March 2008.
My back 3 looked like this:
Smeltz
formidable stamina tragic keeper
solid pace solid defender
average technique good playmaker
poor passing unsatisfactory striker
Popovic
formidable stamina, hopeless keeper
very good pace, very good defender
adequate technique, good playmaker
adequate passing, solid striker
(I'm pretty sure he was only solid-solid for this game, he was still getting A-League starts 4 seasons later)
Guard
formidable stamina, tragic keeper
solid pace, solid defender
solid technique, hopeless playmaker
hopeless passing, unsatisfactory striker

pff... you wouldn't even win a DIII league with a back like that now...
it just shows how hard it's becoming to get to the top.

My backline was a tiny bit better when I arrived in div ii and they got destroyed!

Whilst I agree with you, what's being missed here is the increase in both the number of quality players on the transfer market and the income generated by clubs in III now as compared to then. Admittingly there are also more teams too, kind of negating the players bit.
What made it easy to progress up the leagues was because of the number of bots which used default tactics and default players such that anyone could knock em over. Now that leagues are filling out people have been stagnant but their team strengths haven't been, forcing a chain reaction from top-down causing it to appear to be difficult to bridge. Had there been no bots it would have been a much different story.
That it's even physically possible now for III to pickup decent players is somewhat compensation for the difficulty of promoting up the tier. I actually think a number of our III leagues are not as difficult as back when we started. For example naph had a bit of a nasty III league for quality. Tribe, Krayzees?, Salgaocar and another team I can't remember without checking archive were all in the same league. Similarly I think Tigermaster had a tough III league with himself, Gondor Guardians,Boyd Singers,Cumlionibus and Victoria Orchard. The system was skewed for new teams as they mainly got assembled to the first numbered leagues in each division, so III.01 and III.02 were heavier with human sides then III.08,III.09 etc. At the same time we were all getting around 60-80k a week with the odd exception in III. What's being received now? 150k? I'm not exactly sure of the range anymore. Wasn't that long ago A League was only around 280k and under, but has blown out recently upto 500k.
Anyway it's much more difficult to get to the top for newer sides now as a result of all us experienced players taking up the spots in the higher leagues. It's still catchable but it takes a lot longer and also commitment to do so. You're not that far away player wise from the bottom rung of A League. Another season or two and you'll be right up there.

Yeah the old "lump all the human managers in the same div in div III" whilst seemingly great for generating activity, never really worked.
I joined III.03 late in season 4, the season murter promoted. There was a team with a good youth squad.
Season 5 I had to beat out Salgaocar who joined with IMO a stronger team... only beat them on goal difference my first full season. I'm sure I also had to deal with Punk Hooligans FC who were a real tough challenge at the time. They were forever the bridesmaid in the div III.
Promoted to II.03 which had:
FCM Tigers (gun strikers and future NT coach TigerTUFF)
Adidas Predators (pretty good outfit, but they blew up their entire team every season)
Nilstars (Had finished 2nd in II the previous two seasons)
The Charismatic Llamas (Div II stalwart at that time with NT defender Jamie Garland)
Central Coast Mariners (a team that had already promoted up to A-League and dropped back)
Steel City FC (another ex-A-League team)
AllStars (about the same age as my team, but struggled in div II and went bot shortly after)

Ah yeah, Krayzees were in III.02 I think. There's another team that came from there that is a big club these days I'm sure. I think I know who it is but I'll check their history first to confirm ;). Larikans,Losers and inter united were all pretty tough teams in that III.02.

I'm not worried, I think I'll be there within 2 seasons and will do some damage (I don't get formidable shooting week in week out for no reasons...).
But it will have taken a while to get there! And I think it takes longer each days that goes by for a newbie to get where we are. (logical since the bottom threshold is alway about the same while the top is improving everyday).
