Australia vs Ireland

This saturday we need an other win to be first in our Group.
Ireland is a strong team.

Their last results:
win against Nicaragua (22:0)
draw against Uruguay (3:3)

-> This draw against Uruguay shows, that their team isn`t so bad. They had a much deeper rating and dominated Uruguay during the whole game. Against Uruguay Ireland played a 5-3-1-1 with 1 winger. They want to counter.

The middfield from Ireland is really strong.
A player like Liam Caffrey is exactly what we miss.

But:
We have self-confidence too. Against Israel we made a good game and got a draw. And last week the game wasn`t so bad too. The result (only 5:0 win) was not good.

All in all it will be an open game. The bether tactic will win this game I think. And I`m sure that Australia will win this game. I have more possibilities then Irelands-coach. I can play the 4-4-1-1 from Israel, switch to a 4-4-2 or a 5-3-2. So I will pic the best one and win this game.

Question:
What do you think? Is Australia the favorit against Ireland?
Why/why not?

Looks good. I think we're easily a match for Ireland. It should be a good game.

The tactic and the set-up will then be in the Closed forum from Australian Nationalteam (link on the National-team page). There you can join if you are Australian :)

We should beat Ireland. The result will be close though. I think throughout history with the exception of one or two games, the results have been in the balance throughout the game.

Hopefully you're able to put together a good performance, past 2 have been what I'd consider acceptable but nothing to be happy about.

Question:

1) Why on earth was the defender red card not covered, or if it was why on earth was it the central one that replaced the middle, which doesn't fix the hole anyway?

2) What did you make of that performance? Please don't tell me you thought that was good like you have done so far.

So far 1d -> debatable as to whether that result was acceptable or poor, 1w which was below expectation due to poor finishing and 1l which was horrible to watch and we never looked threatening.

How do you overcome this poor start and where to from here?

1)
I didn`t covere the red card. I only covered the two defenders on the side. The reason: I thought that ireland would play with a winger and didn`t want to give up the sides. And the midfield I didn`t want to give up too.

2)
The performance was horrible. There is nothing to say. The first two games were ok, this one was horrible. To be honest: I didn`t suspect the 6-3-1. I wanted to show a nice game with combinating football.

I have to analyse the situation now. And the new engine is horrible, I don`t really understand it so far. The solutions seems to be a 5 or 6 man defense. Thats horrible, and I don`t want to play with 6 defenders. In the next weeks I need to find a solution for this problem. Probably I will play with a 4-4-2 again or a 4-4-1-1.

You can be sure, I will analyse the situation and search solutions.

I actually think that a 6 man defense is overkill. We lost it because of the gap in between our central defs and a poor throw in option. Watch it again and out of the 10 shots they had, how many went through that channel?

I think that the engine isn't vastly different from before, the big one being that you can't simply stack a defense and expect to win. 5 man deep defense with hardly anyone covering the middle (2 in fact) isn't ideal anymore. We need to look for something else like a 5-4-1 or a 4-5-1 or possibly even a 5-3-2 or 4-4-2. Either one needs to cover the centre of the field and not allow other sides to dictate the shots as what happened today. We would have been murdered had they had a striker with higher tech.

I admit I haven't watched much of this new engine, or your matches, but what I keep reading from the Australian users is, with this new engine midfielders are even more important, and we need to get and hold the ball with them more.

What I hear from you is, we need to add more and more defenders, to stop the goals being scored against us.

In saying that, do you think you are correctly representing the Australian community with the tactics of the Australian Sokker team? I get the feeling you feel under the pressure and don't want to risk a more aggressive tactic in case it backfires, but all this defending is doing is causing you to get worse results than expected of you.

Ah no :)
I had much more pressure already with Lietuva and Switzerland on the World-Cup 2 times. I need this matches now to find a good tactic. The 4-4-1-1 from the Israel game was good, I think. Today I wanted to check a 5 man defense.

Now is the question what the best for Australia is. I think we will try it with a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 again. This gives us the possibility to dominate the midfield, like you write.

It was not a good performance, but it was a friendly. No damage done.

Credit to Ireland for putting together a formation which made us look completely impotent. Their full-pressing back-6 let their 3 mids take our 2 mids out of the game. That left just our back-5 to feed balls to our winger and strikers. They were not good enough to capitalise on Ireland's high defence... their passing and PM meant that very few balls were played over or through the back-6 of Ireland's defence, which was often positioned dangerously high.

Then the red card was not covered, which was opened a tunnel for Ireland to hit us through the middle. They deserved the points today.

We need to learn some lessons from this game, then look ahead to the next.
