Hot Comment: incredible match. Game dominated tactically from us, both in the first and second time. Cuba wins by only one shot on goal (in the only action of the match). Absurd. We fail 3 shot on goal, all as always 1vc1 alone with the goalkeeper.

For me, we deserved at least a draw... also because Cuba has built one single action goals in the entire game...

Cuba is only GK and defender Vélez. Match dominated by Australia ;)

Ratings may tell a story....their def = VG....our attack = G. Bigger margin there than the reverse.

I don't see so much difference.
They have been lucky to sign a goal, while our problem is just sign goals...

Too bad it happened in this way, because we did not deserve to lose, in my opinion. As in the other two games, we play well, our defense allowed them just one shot in the box; we had more scoring opportunities (some even sensational, e.g. three 1 vc 1 failed), but we do not score. Our problem is just that.
At the tactical level, we blocked the action of the opponent. Some consecutive pass of our midfielders, were really beautiful. In the first half, our wing was well put, sin has no pass in at least two occasions... becoming slow and to retrieve the ball from the defender.
In the second half we changed tactics, moving defense from 5 players to 4, adding a striker, but it was not enough. In the second half our defense was perfect, but our attack was often marked, and could not move well.
But even in the second half, we had another huge opportunity, but their goalkeeper made another miracle.

Yeah, just realised I've misread it.

Why were the back 4 so deep compared to the opposition....& the gap to the midfielders...espesh those providing protection?

i don't know why but i'm sure Pavoniana have done a good tactic in this match, like in others 2.

Our problem is our attack doesn't work fine. But in this match we don't deserve to lose, imho.

Why were the back 4 so deep compared to the opposition...

In the second half, the defense was far behind because I applied the tactic of '"ELASTIC".
With this tactic, the defenders may face to front at attackers. This allows, the defenders can win also the 100 % of tackle. ;)
In the second half, in fact, our defense has never suffered. Cubans have never been able to shoot at goal. If applied well, the tactics of the elastic is deadly.

The midfielders are away from the defense, for the "elastic tactic". Because the space is covered by the defenders that advancing quickly to deal with the attackers.
Move too back the midfielders not worth it, when playing with the "elastic"!

Just trying to throw ideas as to how we lost. I guess some days it just happens.

There are a few reasons why we lost, but I wouldn't beat up about it too much. 5 shots to 3 and the one real chance they get they scored.

There a few things that you may like to consider.

1) Playing really deep with 5 defs back, 1 winger a 1 striker, will reduce chances we get to score. It also restricts the oppositions chances as they find it harder to get past. It's a good option if you're playing a game that you want to minimise the damage or sneak a win on the break but if you're against a weaker opposition and you expect to win it's probably not the right tactic to use.

2) Midfielders too far away from the defense. I understand what you were trying to do but the goal we did concede came because of the choice to have midfielders not supporting the defenders. A quick through ball through a gap to their striker sealed that fate. It's not as lethal at U21 level as at senior level but it's still something I personally frown upon.

3) RNG. You lost on the RNG as the one chance they had they scored, we had a few early and didn't finish. Not a lot you can do in this space except to try and create more chances whilst trying to reduce the amount of chances the opposition gets to increase your odds.

Bottom line is it happens. Not a great result for us but you replay that and we probably win 1-0. Just how it is when the shot count is low for both sides.

Hughes is on DEF orders, because he only played the first half and did the defender. Then entered in its place a midfielder and has played in midfield. In fact we changed tactics to 45 minutes! :)

Anyway, Hughes NO PLAY in midfield. ;)

the statistic 5 shots to 3 is quite misleading, it makes you think of a even match, while it wasn't, the 5 shots we had were all chances and there were other dangerous situations where the striker was stopped while running to the goal, i just saw the match and i don't remember Cuba made any shot apart from the goal, maybe a pair of shot from 50 mt. far or headers from outside the penalty area were the other 2.
Still i agree with you, i would have probably played taking more risks, with 2 strikers and a higher 4 men defense from the beginning.
