the statistic 5 shots to 3 is quite misleading, it makes you think of a even match, while it wasn't, the 5 shots we had were all chances and there were other dangerous situations where the striker was stopped while running to the goal, i just saw the match and i don't remember Cuba made any shot apart from the goal, maybe a pair of shot from 50 mt. far or headers from outside the penalty area were the other 2.
Still i agree with you, i would have probably played taking more risks, with 2 strikers and a higher 4 men defense from the beginning.

5 man defence is a waste of 1 player with the new ME. Wingers are largely ineffective, but especially at U21 level.

For defense I tend to agree as for wingers I still disagree :). Whilst their accuracy of hitting heads has been reduced (or at least appears to have), their ability to beat the man and get in behind and put a flat pass to a striker who came through the defense line before the defenders react will still create chances. At the very least it drags a defender or two away from a striker as defenders automatically adjust to mark/cover a player. You really just need to have your striker positioned appropriately and wingers still work alright, just aren't the only option anymore.

It's true, but you have to have exceptional wingers at U21 level, otherwise they are inefective..
Not sure Australia has that type of players..
2012-10-15 09:17:26
Exceptional is relative to the team you are playing, so I'm sure there are occasions when we do have this type of players, and occasions where we don't
2012-10-15 11:19:13
Except wingers you need a base level of passing, tech and pace to make them work, plus you need the rest of the midfield to have enough passing to hit them without putting the ball out. That is rare in U21's. Let the other team have an unmarked winger and put the extra man in midfield to pressure their midfielders so they can't hit the winger and give an extra option to pass to for when you have the ball and to pull the defense out of position. Cometers wingers will play the smart ball on the ground to the open striker. I doubt an U21 winger will do it enough times to hurt you. You shouldn't manage U21 the same as club 1st teams.

That being said I did the same thing I use for my club side and it almost had us qualify, so again it's a relative term. Really only lost to Argentina twice (once narrowly) and the loss to Paraguay I think was due to failure to change anything from the previous few weeks.

You can reduce the chances of a ball being put into touch by where you place the winger. You need to compensate for where the winger is positioned definitely but it's still achievable.

I haven't gone through matches last few seasons but I'm sure it had it creating chances for our U21's last season.

I think it's relative. For a flat pass you require much less passing then you'd think, and even less required than for a pinpoint cross. It's not as effective as it use to be, and yeah you couldn't get away with a tragic passer for example but excellent-formidable you can definitely have it working a few times.

Today, finally, I'm home and I can respond calmly to the very interesting discussion! :)

1) I do an important addition, that no one has said: Cuba is a team Under21 level equal for three reasons:
- Cuba today has 128 members ... australia exactly half: 64 ......
- The rating of the team score is influenced by a key factor: cuba has many very strong players in the primary skill, but that skill secondary low so they get lower marks for that. However, we have all players "fairly" complete but with a few primary (for example, in defense we had a player with excellent in defense ...), which are less strong but take the highest ratings.
- Cuba Under21 has been trained for years by an historical Italian coach, and he has grown players and enriched the national database (which in australia unfortunately has not been done, but I'm doing now: in fact the number of players in the DATABASE four times as large as when I was elected! But the fruits of this work will be seen in 2/3 seasons ...).

2) I agree with cometer on the wings: "Whilst Their accuracy of hitting heads has been reduced (or at least Appears to have), Their ability to beat the man and get in behind and put a flat pass to a striker who came through the defense line before the defenders react will still create chances. At the very least it drags a defender or two away from a striker as defenders automatically adjust to mark / cover to player. You really just need to have your strikers and wingers still work appropriately positioned alright, just aren't the only option anymore. " In fact, with my club do many goals using the wing, or help to circumvent the opposing defenses and are a more offensive!

3) question "WING":

a) I state that in the games that I played with australiau21, I used four different tactics and only 1 time and only for 45 minutes I played with the wing. I know that the wing makes Under21 not the best (In fact, so far I've never used), but, as he said Cometer, it is still an arm more! and many times the element of surprise has more than anything else ... ;)
unfortunately it did not work: our wing have broken the cuba defence in 3 times and played many balls, but it was not decisive. However, the type and amount of game he had to do made it ... Cuba instead it took only one shot in the whole game to win ... What should I say?... Cuba was perhaps more fortunate than us ... :)

b) However, as Achmid says: "Exceptional is related to the team you are playing, so I'm sure there are occasions When we do have this type of players, and occasions where we do not", in this match I've seen that there was room for the insertion of the wing, which could hurt the defense of Cuba and I've used it for 45 minutes. Sometimes you have to also take responsibility and that's what has been done against Cuba. If one of the three occasions that he had our wing was made goals, I was super hyper mega talented coach? :)

c) @ Labamba: "It's true, but you have to have exceptional wingers at U21 level, Otherwise they are inefective ..."
@ Labamba: "Not sure Australia has That type of players .."
@ uberfurious: "I doubt an U21 winger will do it enough times to hurt you."
@ uberfurious: "Wingers are Largely ineffective, but Especially at U21 level."

I agree with you when you say that the wings in Under21 make little, in fact, my choice was a calculated risk. But I do not agree when you say that Australia does not have a decent player for play wing. In fact the wing vc cuba, Cormac Greenwood [22983021], which has a high engagement of € 10,525, has very high levels of skill in the own important that claimed precisely the same uberfurious:

@ uberfurious: "Except wingers you need a basic level of passing, tech and peace to make them work, plus you need the rest of the midfield to have enough passing to hit them without putting the ball out. That is rare in U21's. "

Now I can not reveal the skill of the player, but I assure you (for Under21 and for play against cuba) Greenwood is ready. Suffice it to say that he has more passing, of my wing club!
Instead, with regard to the question of the passages team because the new engine, I chose all players with steps and directing appropriate and in fact the steps of our midfield so far have always been the most beautiful and effective than those of our opponents (except one)!

4) @uberfurious: "5 man defense is a waste of one player with the new ME."

Yes, you're right with the new engine. Unfortunately we only have one strong player in defense, while the others are either slow or have little defense. So, at least the first time, I wanted to defend the best. Maybe I could take more risks! :)

5) @ uberfurious: "You shouldn't manage U21 the same as club 1st teams."

Of course! I know, I do have 5 seasons on the staff NTitalia and 5 seasons on the staff NTU21 Italy, and I know the different needs of the two categories!
I repeat: the choice of the wing was a surprise move, than for me has succeeded only in half, because he participated in many actions, (eg to best assist this failed then the attacker)

has not materialized the work.

Anyway in 270 minutes of australia Under21, only 45 minutes of wing can also be! No? :)

Conclusion:
How nice to discuss with the community and see Sokker australia active! If the Under21 must lose to unleash all this participation, I always lose ... of course joke!! :p

If you have any questions or queries just ask! I'll be happy to answer them all!

cris, i agree with everything you said, apart from one thing and we already spoke about it. Cuba can have 2 times the users of Australia but no doubts they were weaker than us and you can see it clearly in the match. That's why i would not have played so cautious in the first half. But yeah, you can answer me that this time i did not made the analysis of the opponent before the match, that's true and i am guilty of it! But last week i was busy and too much pissed off by the new shitty sokker engine so i never logged in :P (well, only Thursday morning to check the trainings)

Quiet teosm: is not a problem! :)

p.s.: Teosm, maybe they were more scarce, meanwhile have made only one shot on goal and have made one goal! : P
if our strikers were scarce as theirs, we would have won 5 to 1! :)))))
