Ranking is based primarily on your results. If you beat a team with a higher ranking than you, you get more ranking points. You lose more points if you lose to a team below you in the rankings. And friendlies are counted.

& that's where it's flawed....how can friendlies count?!

The argument is that it makes managers take them seriously.

They count as much as a league game, it is something people tend to ignore too easily.

or not necessarily ignore, but get shafted if you have a 2nd XI comprising totally of youth &/or stop-gap players, as opposed to somebody who a) doesn't care too much for risking injury to 1st teamers, or b) has a small squad & aside from trainees, plays 1st teamers elsewhere.
Worth seriously thinking about culling my squad to best 14-15, with 3-4 trainees.

You don't have to be that drastic.
my 2nd XI beat small teams in europe or the rest of the world. it's more about who you pick to play against during your friendly than picking your players for the game.

well there'll be no more asking Polish & Czech teams in top 3 divisions if I can come play them...irregardless of crowd figures!!
(still considering my previous point tho')

There's little money to be made with friendlies, sure you can maximise it but does it really worth the effort in the end... money vs ranking pts.
I think you'll get better sponsorship money if your ranking points were higher than trying to scrape a few bucks there and then playing big teams.
It's only my view but you can easily field trainees week in week out and get away with it... just check the few games I played last season after the Cup and before the State Cup.

Now I'm aware of how rankings work I couldn't agree more.
& I'm seriously considering opting out of the state cup...my 2nd XI can't compete with the other teams in there, so no point seeing my sponsorship & ranking suffer for it....moreso as most of the teams I played last season in the state cup were playing their 1st XI.

maybe!! if there was a clause written in to playing games in the state cup along the lines of playing your 2nd XI, I'd stay aboard....but when you play games against teams who have mid to high 20's in their squad but play the same XI that played in the league game, it kills the interest of those who legitimately play for training purposes.
The trick I use is to use the trainees to train, for example if i can train ATT's the max is 6 per week and so I do just that and play 1sts the rest of the spots. Similarly if I was training defs max is 10 so I only train that many and play the rest 1sts. Only possible exception is in pace training if you want to train more but it's upto you, always a trade off :).
I've done that in the past....only briefly tho' as I got bit on the backside with injuries to 1st teamers.
That said, I think I will look at culling my squad to a best 13-14, with 3-4 trainees....this should allow me play 1st teamers + trainees only...just hope injuries don't mount up.

The state cup really put a break on my rankings climb. The ranking formula they use is probably the same as the one they use in real life (is this true?), except in sokker there are about 3 times more goals scored by good teams than RL good teams.
What you lose playing the State Cup ranking wise, you gain it by playing a decent team with a decent tactic each week.
For someone like you and Fantum who havent got plus I would look at these games twice because there's lot of information to grab for free... For someone who wants to play in II, I wouldnt dismiss it that quickly...
I think it's a trade off...
That said I might consider a rule change for next season as it seems some of us arent happy with the formula.
