Asunto: Youth players

Sucks getting a good youth pull towards the end of the season!

I've been tossing around an idea in my head around youths that are scheduled to 'graduate' later in the season. What if, I sacked every youth who entered my youth school who was scheduled to graduate in the second half of a season. Doesn't matter if it's this season or a future one. If it's after the halfway point, I immediately sack them because they will age soon after graduating.

In this way, any youths that I do pull, and are worthy of retaining for training, have the advantage of at least half a season before they age. And I build up a whole youth squad that will only graduate in the first half of a future season. I'd still thin the squad based on talent obviously.

The obvious downsides are that I could miss out on a star by sacking them before I know their talent, and there may be a potential loss of sale income from youth pulls I might have sold.

Just throwing it out there for discussion. Thoughts?

I think you are killing off half your youths by doing this.

As frustrating as it is getting them in the second half of the season, you could always change your mindset and think they are just the age above, getting in early training.

In the end, the younger someone is the better they can be adjusted for future NT purposes, regardless of if they are an early or late season trainee.

If you could be bothered scrolling back through the youths thread, you'd get an idea just how many late season players there are that end up representing the U21s at least. But its a lot of effort.

My general advice based on graduating age and skill (which sokker asistente makes easy) is keep the following players:
21 - Outstanding+
20 - Excellent +
19 - Solid+
18 - Adequate+
17 - Average +
16 - Poor +

These could easily be pushed up a level or two, but unless you are struggling with positions in the youth school, its a good rule.
Talent wise - I don't sack anyone based on talent unless they have been in the youth school for 10+ weeks.
Then I revert to the above table.
Then I will start sacking based on a combination of talent and the above table. ie if they are just going to scrape by the minimum, and they have a talent of 8 - sack sack sackaroo.

With late season recruits, you could just use the above and make an inbetween age. This would mean 20.5 would be Formidable+, 19.5 Very Good + etc.

I agree, just go one point higher on the minimum skill.

I work on the following levels for season start to season end -
16yo (4-6) - i.e. minimum weak (4) early season, minimum adequate (6) near season end
17yo (6-8)
18yo (8-10)
19yo (10-12)
20yo (12+)
It then depends on talent (based on brilliant coach) & ensuring I have minimum 6 spots in squad each Saturday.

I use the following rule. The skills are the min overall skill that I look for in that age bracket when the youth transitions to the main squad

16 - Adequate
17 - solid
18 - excellent
19 - formidable/outstanding
20 - outstanding
21 - incredible/brilliant

Have observed that many players below this min skill turn out to be trash, unless miraculously the skill distribution is very good. This will ensure that you save money while keeping only the youths having a good chance of having a decent skill distribution and probably representing Australia U21.

Regarding the idea of sacking all second half season youths, I wouldn't recommend doing it. You could always consider say, a late second half season 17y youth as an early 18y season youth. For example, in 1 week from now, I'll get two 17y youths, I will never think of sacking them because they have decent skill distribution even though it's the 2nd half of the season.

Rajat Tickoo 17 formidable [11] outfield 1
Mahendra Krishnan 17 very good [9] outfield 1

It's a shame yes, but they are still great players.

Loyd Zillman - #3 U20 ATT. - Likely right there with the top 2 given sublevels
- #7 U20 MID - it's a very close group in terms of skills, but I think the top 3 (Sevin, Burke, Turner) are a little far ahead

Denis Oliveira
#4 U19 ATT - would likely be #3 due to sublevels. Unlikely to catch number 1 and number 2 (Mitchell and Renaud)

Will train both initially as strikers with pace/tech from main coach. I can switch my youth coach in when needing striker training (brilliant)....
... but ideally need to find a new coach with better striker skill.... might be time to play the coach market.
Oliveira may be moved on if not up to speed for future 1st XI.

I find it's good to share even the rubbish ones. It reminds everyone that we all get rubbish pulls too.

Plus there is the odd diamond in the "rubbish". Even ones I have commented on in the past as being ordinary have been trained well and represented Aus U21s
