Nice list there, I think it shows those who have really worked their way up in the small amount of time they have had (the other argument is someone may have just had an awesome team ahead of them, but i wouldn't say that is the case in Aus as we don't seem to have any day traders)
2008-03-17 10:23:25
And there are a few teams there I am certainly not surprised with seeing their names there like TMP(does surprised have an "r" before the p like the uni computer says? it looks wrong)
2008-03-17 10:47:19
When looking through the list, I saw a lot of teams which have signed up but not really gone much further. Maybe our focus should be on retaining those who join rather than trying to get more people in.
Is an Aussie representative notified when someone signs up? It would be good to have some sort of welcoming procedure.

Our aim should be to fill div3 with human teams.
2008-03-17 11:35:24
Yeah you're spot on there. It's because it's so hard to understand. You'll find virtually the whole of div 3 and even quite a few div 2 teams playing default tactics. Then you get guys like Forty Niners who change one square. It's a difficult thing to pick up and it can be quite a frustrating game for new players because there's so much to do and learn. New players specifically need help in areas like the junior school, coaches, training and of course tactics.

Oh and Graeme, the computer is also spot on! :P

The game has been easy enough to pick up for 18000 Poles. Why is it so hard that we have just over 100 Aussie users? Maybe there are some things we can do to simplify it for newbies so they're not confronted with every strategic decision known to Sokker man straight up?
2008-03-17 12:23:56
Just remember that Sokker is obviously very popular in Poland. So many people would know about it and it'd be popular among schools, workplaces etc. So virtually all of them would have been introduced to it by someone they knew. It's more than likely that they would have received help from said person. That's always been my theory.

Best way is a mentor system basically. As soon as someone signs up you need a person to help them with as many things as possible. In fact a large majority of current Australian users could do with some themselves. There are plenty who don't use the forums and login sporadically who could obviously do with a bit of help. Hell I've seen alot of teams with really active managers whom don't use the forums and have been on for ages and still play default tactics and probably wonder why they get beaten by weaker teams. Similarly they probably don't train players properly etc.

It's all in the rules but I know with alot of games I would never go through the entire rules section.

(I was rather surprised to see Sokker blocked by my company's firewall.)

Incentives are often thrown at problems and my gut thought was to offer Plus to promising budding managers. But that's probably short sighted. Some sort of public acknowledgment scheme for the achievements of managers in their first year would probably have a similar net benefit.

We don't need to make new managers Sokker geniuses in their first season, we just need to get them hooked. There are plenty of accomplished managers who have not figured how to exploit the ME to pull off underdog results, yet they've contributed great players to the NT.

i dont use default tactics >:(

i havent changed them in a while though, still good enough for divIII :P
2008-03-17 14:16:20
Yeah but I think the tactics available in Sokker accompanied by the match engine is by far the best feature of Sokker. Hence if they can understand tactics they understand what's so awesome about Sokker IMO.

But realistically they just need basic guidance to help set them up. Really it's daunting being lumped with a squad of 20 odd players and a heck of alot of options to sort through. I remember battrick had a really easy to do guide that you had to complete to receive your maximum starting budget. It was well written and easy to understand and it helped me tremendously to figure out what to do in hattrick! Admittedly it helped me figure out how incredibly bad it was :P

A similar system would go a long way to helping them. Just a step by step guide that they can do at any time and it can start as simply as, have a look at the players in your squad by clicking the player button. To ending with create a tactic or something. Maybe we should develop one amongst the Australian community and link every new user to the thread via an SK mail?

I know admins and maybe mods have access to a list of all the newly approved users for each country...

IMO though it'd be an awesome idea for the mods to give Plus to new managers for like a week or two or something after a certain time period just for them to check it out etc.

I certainly owe a lot to my mentor. ;)
2008-03-17 14:59:54
Admins for sure know. I could easily go and work out which one does the accepting for us and see if I can get a list of the sign ups, so we can try to keep the users. That's probably our biggest problem.

Tactics do take a while to learn, but you start with small steps, like using a default until you're settled then start looking at expanding your skills by looking at training regimes and experimenting with the tactical editor.

Yeh I have to say, without cometers help for the first month or more, I would not have got hooked especially as I really dont like soccer the sport much anyway.

But here I am, a couple of years on, still playing.

@Cloete
Yeh the computer is right, it looks correct on this computer, just not the uni ones.
As opposed to me spelling Hoarde (as in to hoarde comething) wrong in my medicine essay exam :P

Well everybody knows soccer is called football everywhere else in the world (except for the yanks...) Football in Oz is played with an oval ball and 13 fairies...
To me it's no surprise we dont have that many users! plus look where Soccer ranks on the sport ladder in Australia...
You'll have to give it one or two more World Cup before it kicks off properly imo... I wouldnt rely on the A-League to generate too much activity, the level is low and you get to see Champion's league on SBS anyway... which again is watch mainly by immigrants! People will come to soccer because of the enthusiasm generated by a World Cup not by any league... I've seen it after the '98 World Cup when loads of new heads turned up at the gates (and some fit birds too!)
All the above partly explain why we're not that many users yet... soccer is not in the Australian culture as yet... not to the extent of the europeans anyway.

That said we can always spread the word and promote the site to our mates...

The other point is the lack of information of how to play the game and develop the club in something viable and efficient on the pitch.
I owe a great deal to Cloete, Cometer and Vivski for my progress the last two seasons, they've been good advisers and it shows that a mentor system would work in Oz (currently it does work for the poms and the frenchs...).
I've found a lot of information reading various forums... I've added Newbie England, Newbie Scotland, Newbie NZ, Newbie France and honestly there's so much information there it's unbelievable... Most of my posts in our Newbie forum was to replicate topics seen before and allow Aussies users to get the info easily...

Imo there's no need to do what's been done already in terms of guide or tutorial videos but we could just spread the info via links in our newbie forum.
Cometer could forward the info to any new user if he can grab them!

ou get to see Champion's league on SBS anyway... which again is watch mainly by immigrants!

The whole country then, basically.
