Review against Al-Maghric (Morocco)

Worst performance ever. Another terrible showing of this crappy ME.
After destroying and outplaying Morocco 7:3 just 2 weeks ago, we only got a dreaw and our players acted like they were drunk. The defense was again useless (we would be absolutey trashed by any better team this season) with Morocco players dribbling through our defenders from the front constantly. The 1st conceived goal was from standard situation, when Fredericks and Mabedi left their striker wide open, despite their positioning in tactic (as you could have checked) and despite that crappy auto defense feature. He was all alone in the 6 yard box. The 2nd goal was a result of those retarded back passes, speciality in the new ME, when Fredericks passed the ball directly to the striker who was all alone against our GK and scored.

Our strikers were invisible today and made some idiotic decisions, like shooting the ball from 25 "meters" instead of running with it. Another example was when Serola (who was absolutely owned by the left defender today) had wide open break away chance and instead of running straight at the goal, he "kicked and launched" the ball to the corner kick area, then "kicked and launched" it again and then stopped as he was waiting for the defender to comfortably outrunning him and stealing the ball. This is really stupid.

Obviously we've wasted 2-3 break aways and 1on1 situations vesrus the GK and hit 2 crossbars, but our performance today still sucked..

I appologize for the result..

The lower defense didn't help us today as it possibly resulted in fewer chances, but i'm afraid with the quality of our defenders that it's too risky to play higher defense. It wouldn't probably matter today anyway..

With the high defense 3 ATT tactic you don't really need good MIDs to create pressure, but you have to have great defenders to take care of the opponents break aways. I have to find some balance how to position our young and weak defense..

Well, fortunately it 'only' was a friendly game. They are meant to try and learn. ;-)

About those players who absolutely don't perform as they should be regarding their actual skills, you're right about that. It is something I notice more often, we had the same problem in our game against Andorra last week.. Lechese who looked like a 3x tragic player, our defenders got overruled by a striker who wouldn't be able to dribble them once in normal circumstances. It is frustrating and I don't have a clue how to solve these issues.. It seems they now and then just have to play below their level.

And those 'idiotic decisions' you mentioned our quite natural regarding the skills of the youngsters.. They seriously lack playmaker of course. I don't know whether this is happening too often, though.. I only know you shouldn't be surprised when these things happen ;)

And a higher defense is risky indeed regarding the weakness of the current defenders.. I think you should try to use the midfield in a more accurate way. Don't let them move to much since they are to slow and will be exhausted at the end.. I noticed today again you should keep it simple and accurate, my tactic today wasn't that complicated. It was effective, though ;-)

Anyway, keep it up.. this wasn't that bad ;-)

As you noticed, i follow a little your u21 since Kalaka signed with my team ;-)

Thus, i was watching the game yesterday. Let me add some observations if it's ok (if you prefer me keeping out of this, please just tell me to shut up.)

- Height of the defensive line: I think the height of the defensive line wasn't bad at all. None of the 2 goals was due to a too high or too low defensive line. But I'd put the defenders a little closer together, especially closer to our goal (see e.g. the positioning on the freekick that led to the 0:1

- Positioning of the MIDs: IMHO the MIDs were positioned too offensively. I always make sure the mids are always behind the ball (except when playing with ofensiv MIDs behind the forwards). Placing them the way you did crated 2 problems: first, when we lose the ball in the offense, one long ball from the opponent is enough to pass our entire midfield. If e.g. Kalaka would stay at the middle line as highest point, he could interfere and we wouldn't run the risk that a sdefender has to come out of the defensive line to attack the forward and creating holes in the defensive line this way.
Second, the defenders and the mids lack available other players to pass the ball to as our mids are too high and too close to the opponent, especially with low PM. this creates the dangerous passes back (on of them created the 0:2).
- positioning of the forwards: with the new ME, defenders tend to move towards the forwards. When the atts are spread out the way they were, no problem for the defense most of the time. if you put 2 or even 3 forwards much closer together (why not on one side even), sometimes even crossing when moving forward, it is possible to outnumber the defenders one one side or to create holes in their defense (one att is moving backward to receive the ball, a defender follows and the remaining atts move into the hole).

Despite these remarks, I think you are in general doing a great job!

just my 2 cents :-)

Good points thanks I'll try to keep it as simple as possible and minimize their movement..although I don't think they were moving that much. You can see the tactic in the association forum, may be you can elaborate on that..? I would appriciate your comments.

On the contrary I appriciate any comments and remarks;-) If you are interested I'll grant you access to our association, where you can comment on the tactics, since you are following the U21 anyway and I don't think you are a spy for the swiss team (as it would matter:-)

The heigt of the defense line was not problem defensively, thats why I put them lower and made them move towards the strikers, but the problem is offensively, as they are too low, we can't dominate the territory as much and create the pressure, as we did in the last match that we won 7-3..
The positioning of the defense during the freekick was what I was pissed about, because as you can see in the tactic, they should be as close to the goalie as possible, but they just ignored it (could be low TD, but all our defenders have decent level) and they were not standing in the line, despite having cca the same tactical discipline.

- Positioning of the MIDs: IMHO the MIDs were positioned too offensively.

Well they had to be higher, because of our lower defensive line and also the opponent played higher defense than i expected, which made our MIDs too close to our strikers..
If you keep the MIDs too low, what happens, especially with the 3ATT tactic, is that the defenders ignore the MIDs and start kicking high balls to the strikers..it is both terrible to watch and inefficient.
I'll probably have to keep Kalaka lower though, or just play high defense all the time and deal with the break aways of our opponents and hope our strikers will outscore them :-)
It's not the best positioning for him, but you have to realize our resources are limited and I can't play any other tactic this season then 3ATT. Last season I could play anything and I could have changed tactics for every game as we had much better quality in MIDs and DEFs.

I understand your points and i've tried to play it like this, but the "auto defense" was not working for me this way. What I try to do now is the opposite, position the ATTs as wide as possible, put the MIDs in the same line on offense and make them pass from side to side. This way as the defenders are to spread you can also find a lots of holes in the defense. It was working for us so far, until this match..

Thanks a lot for the offer. If you grant me access to your association, I would be glad to join. I am a scout for the swiss u21, but defenitely not a spy. And it's a question of honour and fairness not to abuse this access for any purposes!

Lechesa is not trained probably anymore..he is 14 pace and GK. Not good for senior NT..He could have been divine. I don't know if any GK trainer will buy 2x14 GK..probably not, shame..
