What skills are needed for the different positions?

Well, it depends. Ideally, every player would have all the skills. And different managers prefer different mixes of skills. But, for me it breaks down like this:

Strikers
The three main skills for strikers are striking, tech, and pace. How much emphasis you put on each skill depends partially on your tactic and your playing style, as well as what you're training. I actually emphasize tech and pace over striking in my players, but everyone has a different opinion. One of the features in the new match engine is that strikers will pass more often if they don't have a shot, so PM and passing can't hurt.

Midfielders
Your inner midfielders are usually going to be your most well-rounded players on the pitch. They need playmaking and passing to move the ball forward, defense to control the middle of the field, and technique to trap the ball on long passes. Wingers, especially at lower levels, can just be speedy, high pace guys with playmaking, and as much passing as you can afford. I got a lot of use out of a guy with excellent pace, average passing, and excellent PM when I was in lower levels.

Defenders
Generally speaking, the more time a defender spends supporting the midfielders, the more PM and passing he needs. So, if you play your wingbacks up on offense, they would need more PM and passing. The more pace your central defenders have, the further you can get away with playing them upfield, generating offsides traps. And technique can help in controlling crosses into the box, particularly if you only play with 1 central defender.

Adding to Benmor's:

Strikers

The striker's ability to run pass a defender or break tackles will create opportunities for your offense. The striker skill is important when you're playing high level goal keepers. A formidable striker against a divine keeper will miss many shots before he can score. An unearthly striker needs about 2 to 3 shots to score against a top class GK. Striker VS GK match up also determine if the striker will be able to dribble pass the GK.

Midfielders:

Because of how I used my wingers, both my inner-mids and wingers had to be well rounded. The game is changing and super fast wingers with high tech seems to be beating rounded wingers. Pace, tech, PM and passing are the way to go.

Defenders:

Takling needs to be 2 levels above your opponent's technique in order to successfully takle him from behind. High level of pace is needed to shut down wingers and catch up with strikers.
Playmaking for defenders helps them with quicker reaction and decision in the box. A high PM defender will make a one touch clearance or counterattack pass more ofther(needs passing for counterattack) . Technique is used to avoid fumbling the ball and giving it away to the opposing striker. Low playmaking combined with low tech is disastrous for defenders even at high level of defending. When such a defender makes a mistake, high pace gives him a chance to recover. Avoid placing such defenders in your central defense. If they fumble the ball on the wings, your attacker will be shooting from a bad angle.

Goal Keepers:

Keeper skill was explained in the striker section. Pace can help a GK intercept a running striker, close the angle and make a save. Playmaking and passing help them on kickoffs. Low playmaking and passing can cause a top class goalkeeper to pass the ball to an opposing striker.
