GROUP L: Date 1:
Ísland U21 - Honduras U21 0:0 (shots 5-1)
Today we played the first match in Group L of the U21 World Cup Qualifiers. Our opponent was the higher ranked Honduras U21 (the team from the 3rd pot).
We had draw 0:0. We had more shots on goal (5-1) and we had the advantage on the pitch. We played great in defense, but we couldn't score. Fortunately, we avoided an injury. Our best midfielder Þórlakur Kristinsson has been shown a yellow card and will not play in the next friendly match.
In a week's time we will play a friendly match against Canada U21. I plan to play against Canada U21 with a reserve squad, I will spare our most important players before the match of the 2nd round against Azerbaijan U21, who lost to the Czech Republic U21 1:2 today.
17yo forward Eðvarð Helgason joined our team this week. I hope that he will be well trained and will score goals for our team in the future qualifying for the U21 World Cup.

I am very happy with our game and the result. In a week's time we will play a rematch in the Philippines. The talented 18yo junior Bjarki Þór Frímannsson has joined our team this week.

It is comforting that all our players are now healthy.

We were on the ball more often, we created more shooting situations than in the first match. Unfortunately, the effectiveness failed us once again. The opponent's goalkeeper had great interventions. The Czech Republic played with their strongest squad again and finished WCQ with full points. They were the best team in the group. We took 4th place - just like in the previous World Cup qualifiers. Our place is adequate to the pot from which we were drawn. We were very close to 3rd place - only 1 point. In the match against the Czech Republic we played for a record average mark of 52.8! The match against the Czech Republic was a farewell game for Ísland U21 for Sebastiansson, Ársælsson, Ólason, Kristinsson and Orrason.
We have two friendly matches ahead of us. We will play younger players with the next World Cup qualifiers in mind.

The Czech Republic played with their strongest squad again and finished WCQ with full points. They were the best team in the group. We took 4th place - just like in the previous World Cup qualifiers. Our place is adequate to the pot from which we were drawn. We were very close to 3rd place - only 1 point. In the match against the Czech Republic we played for a record average mark of 52.8! The match against the Czech Republic was a farewell game for Ísland U21 for Sebastiansson, Ársælsson, Ólason, Kristinsson and Orrason.
We have two friendly matches ahead of us. We will play younger players with the next World Cup qualifiers in mind.
